Winter's over and spring is upon us... What boat projects did you get done this winter?

Our list is as follows:
* Upgraded the house battery bank to Firefly (3 total) (348Ah total with approximately 225Ah usable)
* Relocated House battery bank to cockpit center lazarette to improve boat balance.
* Added an additional battery charger (Victron Blue Smart IP67 25amp) to support larger house bank.
* Added Victron BMV-712 battery monitor for the house battery bank
* Added Victron voltage and temp monitors to engine, house and thruster battery banks.
* Upgraded to a Victron SmartSolar MPPT 100/30 Solar Panel Controller
* Added a Garmin GXM54 XM/Weather antenna
* Added a XM Antenna to the Fusion Stereo
* Added a Vesper XB-8000 AIS and S160 VHF Splitter
* Upgraded the 30amp shore power connection to a Smart Plug
* Upgraded to a Rocna 10 anchor and Mantus anchor guard
* Added a helm box to store stuff like binoculars.
* Added a magazine rack to hold maps and screens for the hatches.

Had a question- I just put in the fusion Apollo head unit in our 27 and bought the xm tuner. Stupid me didn’t think about where to put the antenna. I ordered the Shakespeare Galaxy antenna but don’t know how to fish wires up to the mast or even up to the cabin roof. What did you end up doing?

For XM, I did not go with the Shakespeare Galaxy antenna as I didn't want to fish wires to the mast if I didn't have to.
I left about 6' of cable and spent a month moving it around to find good signal. Surprisingly enough, the easiest location worked out the best. See these two pictures.

* Me too: Upgraded to a Mantus 35lb anchor, Mantus bridal, and other mantus stuff.

Your list sounds familiar to my upgrades in the past 2 months. Gets expensive eh?

The bail won't work with the Rocna, so I did this.

For the Mantus anchor guard, the bow roller bolt needs to be longer by about 3/4". That's the only thing I had to replace.

The Mantus anchor guard isn't required, but is an extra level of protection. The point of the Rocna gets within an inch of the boat and it is possible for it to touch the front of the boat if the chain isn't tight. (I've got one dimple on the front of the boat as a result of this).

I also need to install an anchor guard (for a Rocna 15 on my RT31). Do you happen to remember the size of that anchor roller bolt that you needed to change (by 3/4")?

I took the old bolt off and took it to Harbor Marine and found one that matched but was longer.
When I go down to the boat later today I'll measure it and post it.

We installed a Rocna 15 today on our R-31. We haven’t used it yet. Do you have experience that suggests the anchor guard is necessary, or are you adding as a precaution? Thanks!

On the RT-28 OB, the Rocna10 point sits about an inch away from the boat as long as the chain is tight and pulled all the way up. If there's any slack, it can touch. So if you're careful, and always pull the anchor all the way up and keep the chain tight, all is well. I wouldn't say the anchor guard is required. We have 1 small dimple in the stainless steel plate on the bow as a result of the Rocna 10 hitting the boat/bow. That's why I put anchor guard on. It happened once and was minor. The anchor guard means it won't happen again.
 
I have been advised by wiser folks to not rely on tension of the gypsy clutch to secure the anchor when not in use. I use a carabiner from the anchor shaft to the bow cleat to take tension off the windlass. The carabiner keeps the anchor tight in the bow roller as well. I typically keep a couple of links worth of slack in the chain coming out of the gypsy.

We tow a lot and I’m also happy to have the anchor safety in this manner so that if the gypsy did slip under tension I wouldn’t be bouncing the anchor on the road underneath the boat at speed.

I upgraded to the Rocha 15 on our R31 and added the Mantus anchor guard. I agree with Submariner it was not absolutely necessary. But I much prefer how the anchor guard locks in the tip and holds it rock solid in place. With it only 1” away from the hull, I want to know that it will stay put underway no matter what kind of conditions I’m in.

Here are a couple of photos I took recently when the boat was hauled out for bottom paint. The photos give some idea of how close the tip of the anchor rides to the bow and how securely it is held by the anchor guard.

Hey that's a great list! I upgraded all batteries and added a Victron BMV last season. How was the Victron SmartSolar upgrade? I was thinking about doing the same thing.

love my victron 100/30 smartsolar charger. upgrading the panel to a 340W unit and this charger has been a significant upgrade

The original bolt is 3/8" x 4", course thread. It has to go to 4.75" or 5". Stainless.
 
For an RT-27 OB... with the Anchor Guard from Mantus marine...
The original bow roller bolt is 3/8" x 4", course thread. You'll need to replace it with a 4.75" or 5" stainless bolt.
