Wiper motors C28

We have a puzzling issue with our wiper motors that Ronnie is trying to help us with. Both motors burned out for an unknown reason while we were off the boat. We have two new replacement motors that are wired exactly like the original, but the speeds are wrong and they do not turn off without pulling the power from the back of the breaker on the switch panel. They run slow in both the fast and slow switch positions and they run fast in the off position. they continue to run in all switch positions with the ignition off and the key removed. We have another pair of replacement motors on order.

Two questions:
1. Should they operate with the ignition off?

2. Anyone experience a similar situation and/or have a solution?

Maybe the problem is your switches. I don't have a Cutwater, but on the Ranger all of the accessories won't work unless the main battery switch is on.

on our cutwater several accessories were wired such that they run with key out as well as with battery switches in off position.

burnt pair of motors is a symptom not a cause. check your wires with a meter. ascertain polarity and which switch conditions supply power. do this at the connections to the wipers as well as at the back of the switch. i bet you are miswired. i would not put much faith in wire colors, when we were trouble shooting our lighting we found cross connected circuits.

Boats are not wired like cars. The wipers do not get their power through the engine switch.
They will run if they are switched on (and the main breaker is on, and the switch at the fuse panel is on, yadda, yadda). At least that has been true on every boat I have used wipers on.
Sounds like a cross wiring problem to me at this point with the motors not shutting off, etc..
First, were the wipers right when you first got the boat?
If they were not running backwards before they burned out and are now, then either A) wrong motors or B) cross wired

I would be cautious about installing the new wiper motors until someone with wiring experience (marina maybe) rings the wiring to the motors to find which is the Common/Ground wire and which one goes hot for Slow and which is hot for Fast..
DC Motors with two speeds are normally three wires. A common (negative/ground) and two hot wires, one wire being for slow and the other being for fast. Usually your switch at the helm is three position Off - Slow - Fast

Now, if they have some fancy dan electronic speed controller built into the switch, then I'm out to lunch :mrgreen:

Which shows the wiper schematics It is a 4 wire motor because of the automatic park feature (didn't think about that)
But anyone with just a smidgen of electrical experience should be able to ring out the wiring following that schematic.
Meanwhile I will just shuffle over here into the corner and be quiet 😳
