Working on a Normal Checklist for Cutwater C-30 operation

Hi folks,

After couple years watching and learning from this amazing forum, we finally purchased our new-to-us Cutwater C-30S. We are keeping it at Lockhaven Marina, in Seattle, freshwater side. Very excited with the boat. Struggling to find a reason to sleep at home 😀.

As we are coming from smaller and simpler boats, I am working to structure an operation's checklist. I compiled the checklist's items using information from my own experience and observations, learnings from the forum and from riding the boat about ~20-25 hours, and last but not least data from boat and engine manuals.

I am sharing 2 screenshots (both sides of the page) here and open for feedbacks and ideas. Probably I am missing some key items due to my lack of experience with larger boats. I would appreciate any input from the tenured members.

If you like it, I can send a pdf version over email (I did not find a way to attach a doc in the forum). I printed using a 270gsm paper and plastic laminated. Easy to keep handy in the dashboard.

Thats a good question. Maybe I am wrong, but I think I should turn it off before disconnecting the shower power cable, and keep it off until I connect it again.
 
Most people use the shoreside breaker when connecting/disconnecting the shore power cable.

Given only new marinas have ELCI protection, it probably makes sense to continue to use the shoreside breaker, and leave the boat enabled. However, I'm trying to think of the case where a short happens between the podium but before the ELCI breaker on the boat, what exactly the ELCI would protect, I don't think anything, so maybe it doesn't really matter - however I'd rather exercise the 10,000 cycles a breaker has as a switch on the marina's hardware than my own.

Thanks for sharing that watson1987. So, I will start turning the shore power breaker off instead of the ELCI switch in the boat.
 
Great detail! I really should build a similar thing for my family to help delegate tasks and get our kid more involved in the boat operations.Her current job is to flip the shore power breaker since its in her cabin.

A few questions and suggestions based on what I usually miss/forget.

Why are you closing the raw water intake? In all my years of boats I've never shut it off between operation in the PNW. The risk of forgetting to re-open it worries me. Obviously harder to do with a checklist.

Bilge Pumps - make sure both operate manually and listen for automatic operation.

House Battery Voltage - I don't yet have a shunt. I recently came back to the boat with 10v and discovered someone threw my shore power breaker. Solar couldn't keep up to keep the house batteries topped up based on our 12v loads.

Fresh water pump - I usually leave that off when departing to avoid risk of a plumbing causing water damage in the cabin. I also keep the hotwater heater off.

Holding Tank check - realizing your holding tank if full after you've docked is frustrating. You definitely don't want to find out because you've got black water leaking out your vent...

Trash and Fridge - realizing perishables were left in the fridge or cooler for 2 weeks is an unpleasant return. Same for trash.

I don't know honestly. I thought it would be a best practice. It is my first boat with inboard engine. Good to know I don't need to close it after using the boat.

They run every couple minutes right? I always try to check the sound of the pumps getting activated

I dont have a shunt. Planning to install and planning to have some sort of alarming/detection for shower power outages

Good insight. Currently I am keeping them on. I will add an item to turn them off after leaving the boat

Good call as well. I will add an item. My wife checks every time, but better to have an item in the checklist

Good Afternoon:

I am retired Coast Guard and was brought up on checklists. On our boat (R29), we have numerous checklists and use them ALWAYS.

In regards to raw water intake (engine seacock), generator seacock, and AC seacock, all are closed unless in use. This includes shutting off the AC when we leave the boat. The reason is that seacocks are essentially holes in the hull and if a hose/clamp goes, then water is coming in.

I can recall numerous cases where seacocks failed and boats were damaged or sunk at the dock. Easily prevented by using a checklist and visually checking overboard discharge right after the engine and/or generator is started.
