Yamaha Outboard's Tilt Lock care

FYI...

A friend of mine alerted me to this information the other day.... I'm passing this along for others.

In a thin Yamaha book named "Maintenance Matters - A Simple Guide for the Longevity of Your Outboard" (presumably in the pack of manuals delivered with a new boat) some information about the care for the two engine trim pistons is provided.

This engine aspect was not covered for me in the 2-day new boat training.

Well, I went through the motions to see if this feature was available on my F300 today.

At first I was under the impression it was not...... but read my activity below...

1) I raised the motor up and flip the bracket lever down as the video showed.

2) Then using the engine's up/down toggle pressed to make the engine go down, which it did a fraction until the bracket stopped it and holding the down toggle a second or two more the trim piston rods did not retract.

3) I tried step 2) maybe two or three times with the same result and was about the give up thinking the feature was not provided on the F300.

4) Having a bit of a persistent nature I tried one more time and held the down toggle on the engine down longer this time and for maybe 5 seconds longer and very very slowly one of the engine trim rods started to move and retract..... I continued to hold the engine down toggle down and watched the one engine trim rod retract all the way.

5) I continued to hold the toggle switch down and the other engine trim rod also started to very very slowly retract and eventually retracted all the way.

So it does seem this feature is alive and well for the F300. The very slow retraction of the engine trim rods must have been because of the protecting grease being somewhat hard having been expose to temps in the 30ºF to 40ºF range for a few weeks.
