Yamaha to Garmin connection

Anyone use the J1939 connection to get the Yamaha info to the Garmin 8612? I am working on a minor issue and found that if you turn the engine on before turning the Garmin on fuel remaining is using the info from the Yamaha display v the more accurate data used by the Garmin unit, fuel in tank less fuel burn. If the Garmin is on before the engine all is okay. Additionally if the engine is on before the Garmin your choices to add fuel do not display.

I don't know what my Yamaha to Garmin connection is, but I have found that when running the genny at anchor for several hours, the fuel display on the Garmin 7612 does not reflect the gas used. Related?

Using the Genset would not register on the Garmin so that is to be expected. I am just trying to figure out if my situation is normal or there is a glitch somewhere.
