Yanmar 30 cylinder damage?

I have an R-21 EC I purchased new in 2012. I took it in for a service and the yard is reporting cylinder damage in the Yanmar 30. I am in Friday Harbor, WA. The boat ran fine when I dropped it off so I am eager to get a second opinion. I've never had cooling issues which google is telling me can be a cause. Does anyone know a good Yanmar yard/mechanic in Anacortes, WA area? Thanks for any info.

Cylinder damage is pretty generic. Were they more specific on what they found? Also if they were doing routine maintenance how did they find a damaged cylinder?

They were doing a sea trial after the service and it began smoking and bucking. I have not seen the damage in person but am going to look at it in the coming week.

In the past 15 years of cruising in the PNW on 3 different boats, literally ALL of the major engine issues I have experienced have been a direct result of incompetent maintenance work done by “professional boat mechanics” at marine shops.
It was working just fine before taking it to the shop? Then some “professional” worked on it and now it’s broken? I’d suggest you look long and hard at exactly what that shop did to your engine!
PS: I’m happy to name names of the 2 shops in Anacortes and 1 in Everett I’m talking about if you send me a PM.

Sounds suspiously similar to what happens when someone forgets to open a seacock.

Hmmm, sadly they may have caused the issue. If that has never happened to you then it is unlikely that it would happen after a service unless they messed up. Just a thought.

That is exactly why I do all of my "routine" maintenance myself.
