The Yanmar engine has 2 oil filling ports. I guess the upper one is for rocker arm and lower for engine. Do I fill the rocker arm port separately and, if so, do I fill that to top.

The Yanmar manual is quite confusing and never makes clear if both filler ports are to be used separately.

Oil should not be added to fill to the top of either opening. The only time my engine has needed to have oil inserted is at oil changes.

Oil is poured into the hole at the top of the valve cover/rocker arm cover. It then flows into the sump at the bottom of the engine.

The oil dip stick, used to measure the amount of oil in the sump, is on the starboard side, forward section of the engine. It slides thru a tube fastened to the bottom of the engine. (Is this one of what you refer to as ports, or are you talking about the filler port for the transmission/marine drive unit?)

Check oil level by removing the drip stick from the tube. Wipe it clean and re-insert it fully into the tube. Remove the dip stick again and read the oil level on the stick; it should be between the two lines.

One should allow plenty of time after adding oil before checking the oil level. It takes time to get to the sump, in fact some of it will adhere to the various engine parts until the engine is run and allowed to settle/drain down overnight.

Thanks for the info. I guess what confuses me is that immediately next to the dipstick there is also a port with a yellow "oil" plastic cap. I fully understand what you say about filling the oil through the rocker arm oil cap on top and I know how to use the dipstick.

I guess the second port leads directly to the sump or, is it perhaps used to remove oil when it is changed.

In summary my engine has two plastic yellow oil caps - one at top which I will use to add oil and a second one next to dipstick.

They are both oil filler caps and feed the same sump. Pick your favorite one.

Great. Thanks very much for the info.

Remember oil is checked ten minutes after shutdown of a warm engine. At least that is what I think the book said. Do we ever do that? Once in a while! Bob Heselberg Eatonville Wa

Is my face ever RED? 😳 😳

Checked oil today before going to refuel. I know I've done this a minimum of 60 to 70 times in 138 hours of operation. Guess what? I finally noticed that second oil filler cap, right next to the dip stick. donnevin mentioned both fillers in his initial post. Since I'd ignored what was there on the engine, I had no idea what he was saying.

Sorry.

My guess is Yanmar provides the lower port in case the upper one cannot be accessed due to insufficient headroom or something. I know so little about engines - never changed oil in car - so I really had no idea they both went to the same place. Thanks Gene and all the others for helping me.

Some one mentioned these engines are used in industrial applications. I'd guess they have them in enclosures, like the gensets are enclosed. If so clearance on the top could be limited. A second filler makes sense.
