Started engine and forgot to open seawater engine intake. Engine overheated and black smoke. Limped back to marina and realized mistake and opened the seacock. The large gray plastic thingy just past the mixing elbow burst at the bottom
and cooling seawater poured into the bilge.
Anyone know what this part is? I can't find it much less know what it is called in the manual. Looks like a large round muffler. All plastic and gray just past the mixing elbow.
I know that I have to change the impeller since it probably was ruined running dry for so long ( real pain to change on 4jh4 hte). It really sucks getting old 🙁

Thanks knotflying, just figured out that it is the waterlock/muffler. I will check it in the morning after engine has cooled
and see what damage I did to it. I have not removed the impeller yet since it is extremely difficult to get at on the 4jh4 hte 110 yanmar. In fact I had spent 3 days changing the impeller last week. Guess I have to do it again.

Hey Knotflying - do I need a detector and alarm? Part numbers? Is total cost about $200?
Thanks

I'm in year 3 with my R27 and I still use a Startup and Shutdown checklist. There are just too many systems and things that can go wrong if not done or not done in the right order. Takes me an extra 2 minutes and swallowing a bit of pride but one checklist item after "Start Engine" is "Check exhaust for cooling water". HTH, Gary

Yup! Always used a start checklist when I flew in the AF 50 years ago. Looks like I'm gonna make up a new start checklist for the boat. I shoulda known better than to leave it to memory ( physical checklist is paramount).
