If you are having problems with log lead time buying parts through Yanmar, you might have better luck BMW.

Some yanmar (bmw diesel) info some might like to know
So the late 90s early 00s yanmar BMW 6BY motor is simply a detuned 530 or 330 D car engine.
So if you find yourself dealing with yanmar or other less than steller dealer support system you're in luck.

You are correct in that the basic engine block and other components Yanmar used in the 4BY2 and 6BY2 engines are the same as the engines in the a wide number of BMW diesel auto models of the same time frame. In converting the auto engine for marine use, Yanmar changed out a number of the BMW parts. The Yanmar ECU being one of the more obvious changes from the BMW ECU.
Some 6BY2 and 4BY2 parts are off the shelf from other manufacturers but some are proprietary to Yanmar and some are identical to BMW parts. The real trick is knowing which parts are BMW equivalent, which are Yanmar proprietary and which are 3rd party manufactured parts.

PS: From 2006 to 2014 the Yanmar 4BY2 is based on the BMW N47 2.0 liter engine. I believe, but am not certain, that the 6BY2 Yanmar is from the BMW N57 2.5/3.0 liter engine that were built between 2008 and 2020.
Other Yanmar engine experts, please chime in with more info or corrections to my notes.

I have a 2010 R25 SC with the Yanmar 4BY2-150. I got the oil filter elements at the local BMW dealer at a fraction of the price that the Yanmar sells for.

The local dealer's part manager was very helpful and essentially gave me a parts breakdown manual for the BMW N47 2.0 liter engine and a list of parts that are the same for my 4BY2-150. Overall, it seems like the BMW costs are way lower than what Yanmar charges.

Stefan,

Would you mind sharing the list of compatible parts?

Thanks,

If anyone needs an Air Filter for a 6BY2, I have one for sale.

It is genuine Yanmar and never been used. It was on board my R27, as a spare, when I purchased the vessel. It is too large for the 4BY2 on my boat. The INSIDE DIAMETER (ID) of the end that attaches to the air intake is ~100mm, or just shy of 4”.

Contact me at mfreeman@sonic.net if interested.
