After a 20nm run today I lifted the hatch to check the engine (4BY2150 768hrs) like I usually do. While looking things over I noticed a bar resting up against the alternator pulley. The pulley had ground a slight groove into the steel bar and some rubber dust was visible from the alternator belt. I could not figure out where this bar belonged. I'm traveling in FL with Mike Rizzo on Illusions, he has the 180HP, he found his under the port engine cover. This bar was spot welded under the cover, it's purpose seems to stiffen the port engine cover. You can feel this bar about 2" in from the port side.
Something else to check and be diligent about engine checks, had I not found this when I did it could have damaged the alternator.

One of the first things I did when I took possession of our boat was to eliminate the engine covers. For two reasons. First, so I can actually see the engine. It is frustrating (and can be dangerous) to notice a small oil/fuel leak while on the water and can't see where it's coming from. Second, as you just discovered, it's just one more thing that can break...

I suspect we have some liability litigation to thank for the engine covers.

I have had two fall out from my engine covers. No damage was done and the engine is quieter since the bar is no longer vibrating against the cover.

I think the real reason for the covers is to protect the plastic parts from damage in the event something falls on them. Also when the hatch is open as I hop over the engine there is a bit of comfort knowing in the event of a misstep i won't be putting full pressure on something and possibly break it. It is nice though to be able to see things if the engine were exposed.
