I was out and about tearing up the high seas at warp speed on Sunday when suddenly my tach and ameter quit working. Within a second or two they were back. Then off again. This continued for the rest of the day. I have not looked at anything yet. Anyone know of a place I should start looking? The wiring on this boat is kind of a mess. Lots of cuts and splices over the past 30 years. I have the 1GM with the factory instrument panel.

I had the same problem with the tach. Sometimes it worked, sometimes not. The tach gets it's feed from the alternator. On my R-25 there was a small plug on the back of the alternator that looks similar to a telephone jack. This plug was not plugged in all the way. I don't know about the ampmeter, but I would start by checking that the wires are tight on the alternator. You might have a defective alternator. If so, instead of paying big bucks for a new one, you can take it to an alternator shop and get it rebuilt.
