Yanmar i5601E

I'm replacing the Yanmar i5601E display with the Garmin GMI 20. The new display runs on the NMEA 2000 network. Does anyone know if the I5601E will need to be retained? It occurs to me that the original display may have served as an analog to NMEA converter without which the new display (as well as the Garmin 5212) may no longer have the engine data.

Don't have an answer for you, but if this can replace the Yanmar display, I'm in. Please let us know how this may work out!

This question came up last year. Andrew reported that the original display must remain in the system. You could relocate the factory display and install a GMI 20 in its original location.

I just display key engine data (RPM, Temp, Oil Pressure) on the 5212. I typically use a combination screen with data blocks on the right side. While underway I do not use the Yanmar engine display at all.

As Russ stated, we kept a small light handy to read the Yanmar display mainly just to read the engine hours and as a backup to double check Oil Pressure, etc. The fuel flow information is very accurate, we never felt the need for dedicated fuel gauge.

That said, the GMI 20 would be a nice addition if you find a place to mount it. That was on my "One of these days I am going to do that list" for our R27.

I could never train myself to note the engine hours before shutting down the engine and would have to turn the ignition back on to get them for the log book.

Even if I did make a mental note before shutting down I would forget it by the time I secure the dock lines, connect shore power, etc. When I fill in my logbook I just turn on the key for a moment to get the hours. This is the only time I actually use the Garmin display. I have the NMEA bus and chartplotter powered up before starting so I can monitor the oil pressure.

I have other combo screens configured and all have the same arrangement of data blocks on the right side.
