I recently was informed of a service advisory for the Yanmar 4BY series engines. This was issued in Dec. 2012 and is pertinent to serial numbers ending in 6 or 7 which is the year the engine was manufactured. (Do not go by the year of the boat, my boat is 2010 with a 2007 engine) the advisory no. is YASA2012-017-M. BY Injector Flange Measurement.
If this pertains to your engine contact your Yanmar dealer for service. I hope to have mine serviced shortly.
I did not find any reference to this issue in the archives.
The service will be covered under warranty.

I became aware of this last June when work was being done to correct an issue with false low oil pressure readings. A technician was sent to my boat and he checked the torque on my injector flanges and they were OK. I also have a 2010 Ranger Tug, a classic R25 with the Yanmar 4BY2-150 engine.

I notified Ranger Tugs about the service bulletin and assumed, perhaps incorrectly, that they notified customers that might have been affected. I should have made a post to Tugnuts as well. Thank you for doing so.

I glanced through the advisory. It seemed a lot more extensive than just torquing down the bolts on the injectors. You may want to take a look at it and see if what the mechanic did was adaquate.

Where did you find this advisory in its complete description? I tried to find it searching YASA2012-017-M. BY Injector Flange Measurement on the web and the usual distractions came up but nothing substantial. Of course my engine falls in this category and has had every known, at least to me, Yanmar issue. I dread trying to find someone to do this work locally as I know that inevitably I will have to haul the boat to Washington. I would like to know just how serious it is and can the work be done by the owner, or at least checked, to see if the engine has the problem or not.

Google search Yanmar BY Injector Flange Meaurement and it should be at the top of the page.
Doesn't appear to be a do it yourself procedure as it requires special Yanmar tools. #3 under warranty reimbursements states Yanmar will pay for travel so that may help you out. I pick up my boat tomorrow from having this service performed.
You would think Yanmar would notify owners of these advisories as well as their dealers.

Read the advisory. Sounds more like a job for a machinist than a shop mechanic. Does anyone know of a Yanmar shop in the Pacific northwest that is competent enough to perform these measurements and tests? As the tests were shown and described it looked more like a clean room operation than an installed operation.

This service advisory was just performed on my boat by Niemiec Marine in New Bedford MA. The service was done as described in the advisory using the required special tools. My engine was within the required specs so nothing else had to be done. The tech related that they have yet to find an engine out of spec. Yanmar covered all costs under warranty.
Niemiec Marine is a certified Yanmar and Volvo diesel service facility, also a full service boatyard.

Wanting to give credit where credit is due- After contacting Yanmar and explaining my "outcast state" concerning their product and yet another factory correction for the injectors I was contacted and they are arranging a mechanic to come to the boat to perform the check functions. I can't say how much I appreciate this as I am planning on finally putting the boat in the water at Newport after making a literal boatload of improvements this winter. Thinking I would have to wait and haul the boat up to Washington or Portland made me a little crazy- and I think the tone of my communications reflected that- so my apologizes to those I might have abused.

So hurrah for Yanmar and Cascade Marine and all the folks that contributed to the solution.

that is great service from yanmar. wonder if larry berlin is still running their tech service he is tops!

The great service has become the almost great service. The service visit fell through although I have been promised that they will do the boat on the water at Newport. We shall see. Have yet to hear back.
