Looking at a 2011 29 with yanmar.
Which motor is thought to be better a yanmar or the Volvo?

I think the Yanmar will be fine they are both good engines. I don't think you will find Volvos in these boats till 2013/2014.

I'm so torn between new and used. I can barely find any used ones. Don't want to lose 100k by buying new. The 2011 is the only one used with in 1000 miles of me. I really want a 29 CB. Forget it. Can't find one used.
Just wanted to make sure yanmar was an ok choice or if I should Keep looking for newer with Volvo.

If the motor blows in the used boat they are probably only cost about 30k. If you spent another 20k for installation and related new parts. You would still be 50k ahead buying used. The only problem with that now you have another 50k or so in the boat that you most likely can't ever recover. In most cases if you are not seriously afflicted with the "I must buy a new boat" disease used boats have usually have all the bugs worked out.The factory has a great relationship with Volvo. Because of that great relationship buying new gives you some clout with Volvo as Ranger sells a lot of their engines. I think either engine given proper care will outlast the owner/s. Get a survey done on the boat and maybe an oil sample to send out to be analyzed so you can have a pretty good idea of the engines condition. Making these kind of selections are part of the experience. On edit how close are you to a Volvo or Yanmar servicing dealer? That has to mean something.

Crazy they cost that much!

I live in Panama City Florida (North Florida) I will have to look and see what dealers are here.
