Greetings all,

We need to locate a replacement starter for our '03 R21. (pre-EC) The Yanmar 3 cyl is the 27HP model I think, I don't have the exact engine number but can get it. My local shop says they can't cross-reference any of the Hitachi part numbers for a rebuild. The starter won't engage about 50% of the time. Removal and inspection shows some rust due to a flooded bilge last year. Any assistance would be highly appreciated, our boating season depends on it!

This might be considered as a last consideration but back in my days of wood ships & iron men (stell submarines actually) we had some success with cleaning and fresh water flushing of flooded motors. If you continue to have trouble with a source you might try cleaning and flushing it.

Hi,
My boat is the same year model, and also has the 27hp. The model number on mine is 3GM30F. I have ref photos in my photo album (Aintso) If you want to compare. Also have a downloadable parts list for my engine (filters, belts, etc. Not starter) that you may find useful.

Do you get a click, click but starter not enguaging? Starting to happen to mine this year, I initially thought grounding problem, now I'm thinking starter solenoid. Once mine is spinning, it can easily turn the engine over, it's just getting it to engage in the first place.

Thanks All,
We are recovering from a very intense USCG-Auxiliary OPTREX training on Shasta Lake this weekend before we go back to our real lives and jobs. I will pick up the starter from the repair shop tomorrow. (it says Hitachi but he was totally unsuccessful at finding replacement brushes, etc for a rebuild and he figures it's the number are all custom for Yanmar). I'll email the numbers once I have them. I have the service manual for the engine...in a very safe place...and just as soon as I remember just WHERE that very safe place is, I will have more numbers... 🙂

Thanks again
