Zincs for the Thrusters

Is there a part number or something to obtain the zincs that are in the bow and stern trusters on the R-25?

I get them from http://www.boatzincs.com (in Massachusetts). I also get the trim tab zincs, propeller zinc and zinc I added for the rudder there too. The website has photos of the various side-power thruster zincs.

I'm sure there are other suppliers closer to you on the west coast.

With the prop nut, and the trim tab zincs - all tests show that is more than enough protection. Do you find the rudder zinc helps somehow? (Is that now standard?)

Ok, I have to show my ignorance.........

There are zincs in the thrusters? Makes sense, now that I think about it. I am guessing by now, ours are gone. Where are they located? How big are they? I know nothing!!!!!

My experience (2 seasons) has been that the trim-tab zincs and the thruster zincs last for one season (i.e. 6 months in salt water) but the prop-nut zinc does not. The surface area of the propeller, shaft and rudder may be too large for the size of the zinc. It dissolves too fast. It looks to me like some more zinc mass is needed in that area so that the zinc will last for an entire season. I was planning on adding a rudder zinc in the spring. BUT, I don't really want to drill a hole in the rudder and disturb the high-speed prop wash flow with a zinc. I wonder if there are any other thoughts on this??

My R-25 did not have trim tab zincs or rudder zinc as delivered. Does anyone know if the factory now supplies these and if so, what type of rudder zinc they use??

In response to the question on thruster zincs: They are small cone shaped zincs held in place with a stainless steel screw with an allen (hex) head. They are located on the opposite side of the thruster from the propeller in line with the propeller shaft right in the center of the thruster hole. (This is hard to describe but easy to show!) They are very easy to replace in just a couple of minutes (if the boat is out of the water!).

The 2009 R-25 came with zinks on trim tabs, rudder,prop, but I don't know about thrusters.

Island Ranger (Hull 23) came with Thruster zincs, and the prop nut zinc. I "ate" the prop nut zinc very quickly - I am convinced that it really just falls off when it gets partially eroded if you don't use locktite to hold the nut in place. The Factory added the trim tab zincs for me - that's easy to do, and now I have enough zinc on the boat for protection.

I also added a galvanic isolator, and avoid plugging into marinas. And, now I am using a Guppy (a hunk of zinc connected to a wire) which I clip onto the grounding circuit and throw the zinc over the side whenever I park at a Marina.

Still, I think the prop nut zinc dissappears too quickly - in the range of 3 months & sometimes less (Island Ranger stays in the salt water year round), and I am still trying to figure out why. That's why I added the Guppy - I'll see how long it lasts now. You may be right - it is just too small?...

Thanks for the info. about the thruster zincs.
Will have to check and see if we ever had them next time we lift the tug out of the water - which we do about every 6 months. I checked the thrusters for barnacles last time, but had no idea about the zincs. We are always pluged into power at the Port of Edmonds. So far, our prop zinc lasts 5-6 months, our trim tab zincs a little longer. We added the trim tab zincs ourselves.

On all of our "Local Deliveries" we will add zincs to the trim tabs. Never added them to the rudder. I dont believe you have one on your rudder either Darrel. The Side Power thruster zinc # is 31180. I have about 4 sets at the shop and will send out a couple sets to Mac and Nancy tomorrow. So all the zincs are located on the Prop, Trim tabs (opt.) and on each thruster.

I think my Ranger 25 is hull 59, or thereabouts...it is out of the water now so i checked the zincs. I can only find one...on the propellor shaft...none on thrusters or any other place obvious to me.

Only thing I can think of is they are gone now. The thrusters have a zinc on each one which is on the opposite side of the thruster prop. I would see if the bolt is still in there or you see a threaded hole. We recently started adding trim tab zincs for our boats we deliver here locally. Very easy to add.

My Ranger will possibly be in fresh water 90% of the time. Is it true the specific zinc sets for use in freshwater are magnesium zincs? Is this something that Ranger stocks?

Is there any particular reason you guys do not put one on the rudder, On one of my boats I had a double sided zink on both rudders. I guess I was assuming I had zinks on that large hunk of bronze. Does the factory reccomend putting one in that location?

The reason we dont use zincs on the rudder is because this is bonded through your bonding system. There is not an efficient way to bond the trim tabs or the prop. So that is why we use zincs on those portions.
