Hi all,

For those with the Volvo penta D4 with the reverse gear transmission, model HS63AE-C, how much ATF are you able to extract: the full 4 quarts per the manual, or a little less?

I’m only able to extract a little over 3 1/2 quarts (maybe like 3.7 quarts). I am using a JABSCO oil change pump with 1/2 inch OD poly tubing (suction side) stuck down into the dipstick port. There is still a little bit of oil in the suction and discharged tubing, and the oil level was probably not at the max mark on the dipstick, but not minimum either.

I also suck what I can get out of the filter side of the transmission which is a little amount in addition to what you get through the dipstick port and will get you close to the 4 quarts when you count the amount that comes out with the old filter.

S. Todd, thanks for the reply. I did also try the filter side, but my 1/2” O.D. tubing was a little tight. Today I bought some 3/8” O.D. tubing and will see if I can get any more out. Will follow up with a final post.

What brand and type of fluid are you using? Dexron 3 is recommended but hasn’t been produced for sometime. I am changing my new to me 2018 for the first time. Old service records I got indicated they used “Dexron” but not sure what type. I don’t think it was synthetic as it was billed out at 6 bucks a quart.

This is what the Volvo Penta dealer supplied me with in Bellingham, WA.

In switching to the smaller 3/8” O.D. tubing, I was able to get a little more ATF out, so the total volume out was pretty close to 4 qts.
 
I use Lucas Oil Products Multi-Vehicle Automatic Transmission Fluid. It states that it meets or exceeds Dexron III (among other standards). It used to be semi-synthetic, but the more recent years state that it is full-synthetic.
 
How did you guys get the ATF back into the engine? Via the dipstick channel with a really really small hose and funnel?
 
Yes, a long skinny funnel into the dipstick channel. You should follow the directions for inserting the filter that Brian Brown posted earlier concerning the ZF transmission.
 
Those instructions were to install the filter with its small O-ring on the bottom of the filter cap and then place the filter and cap into the transmission. That way you are assured the filter is properly seated on the bottom side of the cap and no particles can by-pass the filter process.
