My Garmin and Yanmar panel oil pressure indicators drop out (indicator needle) disappears at higher engine rpm about 1800. The indicator needle reappears at lower rpm. I told my mechanic to get a new oil pressure sending unit ($200).
I see on the Tugnuts it could be an ECU grounding problem or might be a plugged oil sender orifice or the ECU wiring harness is "bad". Has anyone solved this problem for sure?
Thanks for your suggestions!

We have fixed a few of these and it involves doing all of the above. Changing out the oil pressure sender, adding the extra grounding and sending the computer back for reprogramming.

Thank you,

Be careful. I had a similar problem after Yanmar techs installed an engineering upgrade recommended by Yanmar and Andrew. Put $1k into the project after the first authorized shop said Yanmar would not pay because shop couldn't fix it.

The second shop tried for weeks but never charged.

Yanmar said I had to bring the engine to their regional shop at my expense?...

I put in an analog idiot light.

Andrew did what he could - got me pointed to the second dealer - but Yanmar has a problem.

Below is a post I made some time ago. I have a 2013 R-27. Maybe it will help.

“I had no oil pressure. Well actually, I had oil pressure all along, I just had no oil pressure reading on the Yanmar instrument pod. It has been a long process and I got a lot of advice and help from Michael Dolifuss and Michael Angland at Yanmar, and Jordan Clore at Mack Boring & Parts Co. Below are the steps taken to eventually solve my oil pressure problem.

1. My i8150 interface was updated to 1.13 by Yanmar - no change, no oil pressure reading
2. I ran a temporary ground wire from the ground terminal on the oil pressure sensor directly to the negative terminal on the engine battery - no change, no oil pressure reading
3. I replace the ground wire for the oil pressure sensor anyway - no change, no oil pressure reading
4. I tested the oil pressure sensor with a ohm meter. (Engine off - 9 ohms, 750 RPM - 68 ohms, 1500 RPM - 91 ohms)
5. I replaced the Yanmar i8150 interface module with a "test" i8150 from Mack Boring - no change
6. I replaced the Yanmar engine instrument display at the dash with a "test" display from Mack Boring - no change
7. I replaced the Yanmar engine wiring harness with a "test" wiring harness and new i8150 from Mack Boring - CHANGE”

My problem was the wiring harness. Actually, it was one of the ground pins in the wiring harness. Try contacting the folks above. I no longer have their phone numbers.

Sounds like the Yanmar wiring harness ground wire or ground pin in this harness is the weak link here not the oil pressure sending unit or the rest of the grounding system. Can the wiring harness not be repaired or refurbished? Is this due to vibration or corrosion and can I expect other problems with other engine gauges in the future? My engine has less than 300 hrs operating time but boat is 2011. Thanks for your response!

I tried to buy a wiring harness when they broke mine. They wouldn't sell it to me. Said I had to bring the engine to the West Coast of Florida at my expense so they could install it.

Maybe Honda will start making engines friend Boats?

Couple of years ago the service bulletin concerning the oil sensor ground wire and update to the interface was completed and all was fine. This Spring I replaced the oil sensor as it was giving erratic readings and the ohms readings were off. The new sensor has been working fine. 2010 150HP, 900+ hours.

Brian, it is that service bulletin that caused the problems. The engine interface was sent back to Yanmar for reprogramming, the ground wire to the oil pressure sensor was replaced as was the sensor itself (twice), and there was no longer any pressure reading - not zero, nothing

Yanmar tried putting it back the way it was - even mailed my old interface back to me - but it didn't work - and doesn't work now. I suggested, based on other's experiences reported on this board, that we try a new harness - offered to pay for it myself - and they refused to sell it to me.

Andrew intervened and got me transferred to another service location (authorized) who also tried to order a new harness - and were again refused.

The second dealer didn't charge me anything - but they were unable to get it back the way it was. They suggested I installed an analog sender and an idiot light/buzzer and said they would do it at cost but it would void what is left of the warranty. I did it easily - works perfectly to this day - and I actually prefer it to the digital instrument that isn't always on the display.

BTW, Yanmar has dropped the BY series of engines so we have only a limited supply of spare parts.
