What size stuffing box flax does the Cutwater 28 use?

Thanks!

Go to page 25 in the Marine Hardware Catalog and you will find the "nut style" Stuffing box specs . Its PTFE packing , a more modern equivalent to flax/graphite.

Marc-Thanks for the guidance.

Knotflying-I don't need to replace it yet. Just like to be prepared.

Let me rephrase the question based on the great guidance provided by Marc. Does anyone know the diameter of the driveshaft on a 2012 Cutwater 28?

Thanks!

Don't have the info on the stuffing, but some insight on replacement. Once you get the stuffing find a piece of PVC or conduit the same size as the shaft. Then cut you pieces to fit the shaft. The cuts need to be on a bias and the joints need to be staggered, say 12 o'clock, 4 o'clock and 8 o'clock. Make sure you have removed all of the old stuffing. and cleaned it out. A couple of angled metal picks work well. when reinserting the new stuffing have a 1/4 dowel with a larger wooden handle attached to it so you can easily work the stuffing in and even tap a bit with a hammer. Seating the first one in tightly is necessary so once seated screwing on the nut and tightening a bit will help. Do this same process for all three. Once complete install nut and do not over tighten. Run for a while and check the drip while in motion. You want about one drip every 20 seconds. Have a laser thermometer. Check you water temperature that the boat is running in and then the nut temperature There should be no more than a 20 degree difference between the two, 10 degrees is normal, with the nut being warmer than the water. Final adjustment can take a period of time over several hours of use. When tightening go very slow. Only about 1/8 of a turn at a time.
