I am trying to find volvo 15/40 diesel engine oil. My book shows VDS 2 or 3. Now they have VDS 4.5. Can the newer be used or do I need to stick to the 2 or 3? Do I need to stay with Volvo oil or can Chevron Delo 400 be used? Thanks

Hello,

I would stick to the VDS 2 or 3 the manual calls for, it appears that the VDS 4.5 is not needed till the D8 based on the Volvo Penta side. You could use the Delo in a pinch for top off but I would change the oil. Hope this helps.

Thanks,

After breaking on our 2012 I have used any of the wide range viscosity synthetics from the major oil companies available at bulk (commercial) outlets like those associated with transport refuelling and heating oil sales. You can get 5 gal buckets or 4 X 1 gal jug cases conveniently and at good prices. They all have trade names but you are looking for a diesel specific oil like 5W 40 or similar. Might be more money but my faith is on the synthetics for longevity of my engine. Volvo doesn't make their own oil anyway.

Been using Shell Rotella t4 15W-40 past 8 years. Also covers the Volvo requirement VDS-4 and VDS-4.5. It has higher levels of zinc and phosphorous which help to minimize wear so well that also a lot of bikers will run this oil because a lot of the oils stopped using the two because it was not playing well with catalytic converters. It makes life easier in the wear department
