I'm looking to buy a used one I found.
Ad did not list AIS.
Was AIS standard in 2015?
If so, is it receive or both receive and transmit?

Thanks.

Our 2017 cb30 NW version does not have AIS

I have a Garmin 800 AIS transmitter/receiver in my 2019 C28 luxury edition. It did not come standard. The box was $1000 plus a few hundred for installation. I am on the Chesapeake Bay, and thought it would be useful for safety & traffic awareness. Safety, yes. Traffic awareness... kinda. I wanted to track traffic, especially at night or in reduced visibility. Unfortunately, most of the small boat traffic that worries me is not AIS equipped so they don't show up on the chart plotter. Had I to do over again, I would have prioritized a second chart plotter so I could run a full radar screen on one side and the nav chart on the other. It is easier to pick up the little blips of small traffic on the black background of the regular radar screen (as opposed to the overlay screen).

I would still recommend an AIS transmitter/receiver, because it does improve situational awareness. I intend to do some long distance cruising and I see the AIS as a very important piece of safety equipment for people to find you in an emergency. Where it falls on the priority list is a matter of personal use and where/how you will use your boat.

I'll look at teh Garmin 800. Anything you had to order with it to install, cables, adapter, etc? Or was it sort of plug and play, and fine some source of power for it?
Any pictures of your install?
Thanks.

I just did it this week installed AIS send and receive.
I have an older came with our 2014 CB31 boat Garmin so we went with a Vesper XB8000 Our Marine local marine electronics seller and installer said it was better suited for our Garmin then the Garmin Ais if we had a new Garmin then yes go with Garmin.

Do you know what they did? The XB800 is about $800. Maybe external antenna, cabling, splitters, etc?

I bought a Vespe Marine transducer. It comes with an app so I can see targets off my phone and a anchor alarm. You can also up grade the firmware from the app too. Cost was about $700 and it was easy to install.

You need a splitter for the VHF antenna or what I did was to install its own antenna. Than mount the GPS antenna, connect it to the NMEA2k network and power. The whole install was less than 2hrs.

HI!

If you could please send me a picture of your VHF radio and your hull identification number, I can verify to see if the boat came with or has an AIS receiver installed. My email is marcoarias@rangertugs.com.

We currently offer the Vesper AIS receiver/transmitter on our R41 line. I have seen it to be a very reliable and easy to install AIS. It also has smartphone capabilities; you can check status, revise settings, mute/start alarms, etc. via your smartphone or tablet. Let me know if you decide to go this route and I can help you with the install and wire routing.
