I have a 2015 c-30 Cutwater with the Volvo/Penta D6 435. How do I replace the alternator?
It looks like the 6” main carrying bolt will hit the firewall structure when removing it.
I hope that is not the case. Suggestion please.

Its a horrible job. I decided to leave it to the professionals and it took 2 mechanics 5 hours to get the job done. Removing and replacing the belts as well as adjusting the tensioner has to be done by feel. To get any access at all you need to remove the fresh water pump and the Webasco heater pump under the hatch just inside the cabin door and then you can remove the tiny panel in the firewall. When I need more work done on the front of the engine I'm going to have my boat yard cut an access panel in the cave and then install a hatch cover with proper insulation etc. It would be almost impossible to replace a broken belt at sea on these boats!

Thanks TA 6
Looks like I’ll be making that access panel in the cave. I’ll have to get in there and remove part of the depth sounder housing
to get the main alternator bolt out.
I spoke with Cutwater tech support today. They said they’d never had to replace one. Hmmm that’s some good luck.

Poor access to engine components is not uncommon in boats. I was a marine technician for 25 years. I have seen difficult access in many boat manufactures productions. Fluid Motion is not the only manufacture that builds a boat with poor access to engine components. One of the first things I did when I purchased my C26 was make sure I could get to the raw water pump, Belts, coolers, hoses, filters, antifreeze reservoir, alternator and starter for easy access. Well access !!! There is no such thing as easy access in a Ranger or Cutwater. I was able to move stuff around and make a quick removal step in the cave to help ease the accessibility. I advise anyone that owns a Ranger or Cutwater to do this. Even if you are not a DIY owner. It will save you money in the long run. I have talked to several technicians that will not work on a Ranger or Cutwater. I have also talked to a few that will but the service is TIME and MATERIAL. The two engine parts that I could not get good access to is the electric fuel pump and starter. If one of theses components failed I would pull the engine to replace. It would be quicker to do that then remove with the engine in the boat.

Your Alternator and belts adjustments should be accessible. Spend the time to make it. It will be worth the efforts!

What is the best way to make these items accessible
