I’m looking into Alaska Cruising Guides and need your suggestions. I see Waggoner’s but according to what I find it only goes to Ketchikan. Are there others out there for the cruising waters north of Ketchikan that you’ve used or recommend?

Douglass "Exploring Southeast Alaska".

We also used the Douglass guides. In addition to the Southeast Alaska guide there is a South Coast British Columbia and a North Coast British Columbia guide. We used these guides and found them to be excellent!

Also, from the same publisher (Fine Edge) I highly recommend getting the two map set of the Inside Passage. They come in paper foldout or laminated roll up versions. Indispensable for big picture planning.

The Slowboat Cruising Guide is in beta, with much to be added. Given their extensive flotilla guiding experience it would be worth checking out.

Cheers,

How far north of Ketchikan are you considering ? The Alaska Gulf crossing up to Kodiak Island is a vast open piece of water. If considering this far north do the trip before end of September as things can turn very nasty after this time of year.

We are just returning from an almost four month cruise from Seattle to Skagway at the top of the inside passage. We also used the Douglass Guides and found them invaluable. We did find though that Douglass sometimes makes anchorages and passages sound more dire or treacherous than we actually found them. Also, they are evidently printed on an inkjet printer, so be careful not to splash your coffee (as I did) or handle with wet fingers or the print will smear. That said, they are wonderfully complete with amazing detail. Also, the Slowboat site has blogs of their cruises up the inside passage with descriptions of the anchorages and marinas where they stopped, along with dramatic photography. I downloaded pdf’s of these to my iPad for use offline and found them extremely helpful.

Thank you all for your recommendations, this gives me a place to start my research.
