My auto pilot seems to work well holding heading but whenever you change the heading by bumping up one or 2° it makes the turn if you bump it like 5° it rolls over like it’s got to do 180° turn and you have to disengage. I’ve been reading all the posts on the Garman auto pilot pump issues and I’m starting to wonder if this is an issue with mine I have no idea if the previous owners change the pump or not. If I do change how to change the pump am I better off biting the bullet and changing it to one of the Garman smart pumps or what’s in the boat. Right now it’s sitting in my backyard on the trailer so now’s the time to do it. next summer I’m looking at a trip up in the Canada if it ever opens up and I don’t wanna pump failure up there. Would love some input on this you guys are full of great advice can you help me every time I’ve asked and thank you to everybody

Are you somehow triggering the Man Over Board function from either the panel or remote and starting the Williamson maneuver?

Good suggestion.

OP, does it happen with autopilot also?

On occasion when I am going very slow, the autopilot gets confused and tries to find the course and over corrects but usually only when I first engage it. I often use the course correction buttons when using Heading Hold and have never experienced what you have.

Good luck.

No it only seems to happen with the auto pilot engaged and I use a course correction buttons to change the heading 4 or 5 degrees and it is very intermittent

Two quick clicks on the course correction buttons will change the course by 10 degrees instead of one. Perhaps you have pushed the buttons a little too quickly. I have done this before and was surprised by the 10 degree change!

How fast are you going when this happens?

The fact that it only does it when you change the heading 4-5 degrees vs only a couple and it is intermittent has me wondering if it’s the same issue I have when I am going slow and I engage the autopilot and it overcorrects to the point it will do a 180 searching for the right course. I never tried changing the heading while in autopilot mode, just heading hold. I will try that next time.
