Some TugNuts have asked about my bimini shelf. We have made a shelf that is mounted under the bimini top and attached to the bimini frame. This is a simple shelf made from 1x2s and 1/4 inch plywood attached with stainless u-bolts and self locking nuts. The shelf measures 44" x 68.5". The lock nuts allow you to lower the shelf below the supports to allow enough room to store your side panels flat. It also allows you quick access to store or reinstall them as needed.

Side panels slide in from this end and lie flat. No creases or wrinkles, and out of your way.

I added this unpainted stop to keep panels from sliding out while traveling.

This is a close up of the ubolt attachment.

We do not remove our bimini for travel leaving the side panels stored above the shelf. We have trailered over 6000 miles this way with no issues. We have had tall people visit and since head room is only lowered about 4 inches, most people do not notice the shelf at first glance.

Very nice addition/idea  ... paint it same color as the Bimini canvas though 😎. This will hide it even more. 😉

Any idea what the shelf's weight is ? I'm guessing 20 to 30 lbs without the side panels loaded on top of it. I'm alsways concerned about adding weight up top.

Not been a problem with us in over 250 hours and 6000 miles on trailer.....way less than 30#...more like 10-12#.

Was thinking weight up top wrt boat's stability. At 12 lbs not a problem though... but every pound does count...

Barry, we've had upwards of 100 lbs on top of our R-27 with our two kayaks on the sports rack. We never noticed them up there.

Yes Ray, we had 15 gallons of water in addition to our two trikes with no problems either.

Ray & Herb: Thanks for that assurance. It's comforting to hear this feedback. 🙂 T'is the reason I like to start my travels with my tanks full... as you never know what waters/weather may lay ahead. It means safety at the expense of increased fuel burn. With my aerospace background safety always trumps every thing else. 🙂 🙂

BTW Herb... I really like/enjoy seeing your R-27 upgrades. You are very enterprising and thanks for posting info on them along with the slideshows. Thanks. 🙂
