The shift cable on my 2010 25SC broke a few days ago. Knotflying was aboard and he manually shifted the transmission back to the dock. We replaced the cable with a Seastar Xtreme CCX63320 20'. This cable will take a 4" radius bend, others are limited to 8". The original cable broke as it had a very sharp bend in it. The original was 19', we extended it a foot to relax the bend. Replacement went very smooth taping the new one to the old one and pulling it through the interior of the boat to the helm.
Check your shift cables, any sharp bends will lead to failure at the worst time.

He forgot to tell you that you get a cup of coffee and a doughnut when the job is completed!
Yeh labor costs are really escalating. A few years ago this job would have only cost me a cup of coffee!

Where was the sharp bend in the original 19' cable ?

I have been worried about cable breakage. Since my boat is same vintage I will be buying one to head off this issue. Did you have to buy a transition kit or was the cable "plug and play" with the standard threads compatible with the ranger set up?Thanks for any information to help me order the correct replacement unit and accessories.

Right where it goes into the metal fitting at the end of the black cable as it mounts on the transmission.

Here's the link to the one I bought on Amazon. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00 ... PDKIKX0DER The original has standard threads like the replacements, just unscrew the two original end fittings and screw them on the replacement cable. On the back of the throttle assembly be careful in the removal of the electronic unit, it is held on by two screws and note the orientation of the inside portion.

I also have a broken shift cable - I thank you all for your recommendations but can use some clarification regarding length.
I have an R27. As I have searched the literature, I have seen lengths specified for this boat from 19 to 22 feet. Is there a hard number? I'd also like to verify that that the Seastar Xtreme CCX633 is the recommended replacement.
Thanks & Best Regards,
Bluejacket

Wait - Wait - Drop everything! All you have to do is read what's printed on the existing cable.
Who would have thought to look on the underside?
As Ernestine would say - "Never mind"

Great details, but I have one lingering question: it sounds like you used the old cable as a messenger line to pull the new cable from the engine compartment forward, is that correct? Also, did pulling the cable forward go smoothly or were there fasteners/ties securing the cable to portions of the boat that had to be unfastened/cut before you could pull the cable all the way thru? Thanks, Gary

What year is your R27? I have just taken ownership of a 2011 (Yanmar 180), and need to replace my cable.

Would you mind posting what the cable length was? What did you end up purchasing?

Bob - as I said, I found the specs printed right on the cable "Ulterflex Universal C8 Control Cable 21 foot" as others have advised, I bought a 22 foot length. $38.99 from Boatersland Marine Supplies (www.boatersland). Shipping was expensive, but it got here in 2 days.
Best of Luck - Bluejacket

Gayle's Faerie - Bought the new cable 1 foot longer. Pulled it from the engine compartment forward. Went easily till a few feet in then it hung up. Opened up the starboard cockpit locker, at the forward end of which (over the water heater) the cable was trying to make a bit of a tight turn. Pulled the whole rig a few inches to one side and it found a easy way through. No ties or other obstructions discovered, and a good thing too, because there is virtually zero access to the cable run. The extra foot allowed routing the cable across the forward end of the engine compartment and down the port side - seems to be a bit better supported. Good Luck.

Bluejacket, thanks for that installation info. Really helpful to know the pitfalls (if any) before hand just in case. Thanks. Gary
