Changing out Kisae Batt Charger for Combo Inverter/Charger

Hello,

New to Cutwater and this forum. Have just purchased a used 2017 C24 that looks to be wired for the inverter package but only comes equipped with the Kisae charger. We would like to swap out the factory unit with the same brand inverter/charger unit. Is this pretty straightforward? What are the watchouts, potential pitfalls?

I don't know if your boat is gas or diesel powered. The new C24's are gasoline powered Yamaha outboards.

To my knowledge, there is no such thing as an inverter/charger that is ignition protected. Inverters are not ignition protected and thus, should never be installed in the same compartment as a gasoline tank.

I have an RT27-OB, gasoline boat. I have two battery chargers, both installed in the cockpit lazarettes near the gasoline tank. My 2000 watt Kisae inverter is installed inside the cabin, as a separate device, away from the gasoline tank.

With gasoline in the same compartmentit's important that components be ignition protected.

This is one advantage that a diesel engine has over a gasoline powered boat.

Thanks Submariner - good information about ignition protection re: inverters. My c24 has three cockpit lockers, center/port/starboard. Center is the fuel tank (gas) and the charger with house and engine batteries are located in the port locker. Cutwater tech videos show the inverter in this locker. My AC panel has the isolation switch (shore power to inverter) and the remote Kisae switch is located next to this panel which initially led me to believe that the boat came with an inverter. Looked high and low and am pretty sure that one is not installed; nor do I have access to 120v when unplugged from shore. Thinking it is okay to place an inverter in the port locker as that is where the factory usually puts them.

Is your boat gas or diesel?

Mine is gas. I have 3 lockers in the cockpit also. None are vapor sealed between each other, which makes them really one locker for the purposes of gasoline fumes. This is why the inverter on my boat is installed inside the cabin.

I looked at a video about a Cutwater 24 from the 2015 era... and noted they were offered with a gasoline inboard stern drive, or a Diesel engine. Gas or diesel is what makes the difference about where that inverter can go.

I would also add... the location of my 2000 watt inverter is located behind the AC panel. I have to take the AC panel off to see it. And it's buried back in there. I dread the day that I will have to replace it.

With the remote switch installed, it might just be that you have one installed and the GFCI breaker on it is tripped which is why it doesn't work.

The C-24 and R-23 seem to share a lot of design similarities. If you remove the 4 screws on the battery switch panel, you can pull that panel out and look inside to port - that’s where your inverter should be if it’s like my R-23.

My confusion about the location of the inverter is derived from this video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFKiEQNcHkA at about the 27:20 minute mark shows the inverter and charger in the port locker as I mentioned earlier.

I did find the build sheet for the boat and it lists as options; "Air Conditioning dockside C-24" which leads me to believe that there is no inverter but I will check behind the AC (optimistically).

I watched that video. In the port lazarette all that is shown is the Abso battery charger and a galvanic isolator, and the inverter fuse and on/off switch for the inverter.

He says you’ll find the inverter there, but he doesn’t show one.
I think what he meant to say was “you’ll find the inverter on/off switch” because that he does show.

IF you have an inverter, you’ll have:
1) an inverter on/off switch in the port side locker
2) an inverter “remote on” switch on the main electrical board.
3) a shore power/inverter lockout breaker on the AC Power Panel
4) the inverter itself. It is visible from a hole under the main electrical board (if it’s like my R-23, which it appears to be).

Based on feedback from those above, I was able to locate and test power to the inverter (after removing three carpeted panels and the AC panel) only to find that the battery on/off isolation switch for the inverter was faulty. Once power was restored to inverter, and GFI reset all is well. Thanks so much for all the feedback - very helpful.
