Columbia River

It was fun to run into Dave and Bette in Sisu today at Coon Island in the Multnomah Channel. Only two boats at the dock and both Ranger 25s! I have made the run from Portland to Astoria twice in the last year and it is a beautiful cruise. I just found out today about the planned Tugnut cruise and would be happy to take part if anyone is planning for May, June or August. I'm not sure if I can make it next week, but it sounds like that may be off for now.

For those that are new to cruising the Columbia, I really like taking an overnight from from Portland upriver to Beacon Rock in the Columbia River Gorge. The view is spectacular and climbing the 800 ft monolith gives one a sense of accomplishment! The Washington State Park there has a good dock with power, showers, and flush toilets.

Dan,
It was quite a surprise to see another Ranger tug coming down the channel and even better than that to have you tie up for a lunch break and chat awhile. From there we left for Cathlamet, a nice 50 mile run, enjoyed the evening there and split our run back up river by staying at Martin Slough, WOW, what a wonderful evening, frogs croaking and all. From there, back to Coon Island for another night and on up to Government Island and then hauled out the next day. It was a fabulous 6 days on the water. May our courses cross again.

For those that have stayed in Martin what is the key to sneaking back in there? We attempted once but aborted the mission due to depth. I bet there is a trick as I see big yachts back there.

I noticed that nzfisher of Corvallis was asking if there were any launch facilities on the Columbia with a lift. The Rocky Point repair facility has a sling. They are at the Rocky Point marina on the Multnomah Channel.

About Martin Slough, we have been there several times and found no difficulty. You just need to stay mid channel all the way and slow for there are some deadheads but no problem mid channel. When you get to the first right turn, go on up to the private property sign, keep it to the port side and stay mid channel, you will find a short distance of shallow water 5-9 feet and then it opens up with lots of room to anchor and swing room. The dock in there is Tyee's outstation. No access to land as it is all privately owned and posted. Hope this helps.

Just to clarify what may be obvious, the approach to Martin Slough should be from the down-river (north) end of the island. The up-river approach is too shallow. It is one of my favorite spots to drop the hook.
