We have used a 3" memory foam topper for the last three seasons and it was comfortable but not like the bed at home. We are planning some longer trips in the next year and the memory foam topper was in need of replacement so we looked into having a custom mattress made. The mattress would need to be hinged to allow access to the storage compartments and the thruster. I contacted a mattress manufacture in Illinois that specializes in Marine ,RV and Semi truck.https://mcwhorterbedding.com/. Mcwhorter Bedding makes mattress's for Marquis yachts.

I removed the Cutwater factory cushions and Mcwhorter bedding used them as a template. The mattress has air coil springs with latex and memory foam layers, water proof base and sides and a breathable fabric in the front. Mcwhorter also made two sets of custom fitted sheets and a custom comforter. I made a new V berth base out of 1/4" marine plywood with hinges. I'm pleased with the outcome of the project.

I removed the foam from the side panels and raised them. This idea was from a C28 owner. It increased the mattress by a few inches and better for storage on the small ledge.

interesting and impressive modification.
so you also removed the seat back at the bow for more feet room as well?

I assume you sleep feet to bow with this setup? - my biggest complaint is feet claustrophobia with the standard seat back in place.

The back rest is removable just lift up on it. I removed it permanently when I installed the TV. I installed a piece of trim across to cover the unfinished plywood. The TV made it hard to remove the back rest. There is no way I could sleep with the back rest in place.

hmm i will try again: I couldn't make that happen in the past and was scared of breaking something.

Gavin, If you look at the photo below you will see 3 fasteners port and starboard corners below the TV. Zoom in on the photo to get a better view. The brackets that hold the back rest in place are anchored with these fasteners. I removed the brackets and filled the holes with the screws in the event that if I want to use the back rest in the future I can. To remove the back rest for the first time it is a bit snug. Put your hand under the Port side corner of the back rest and tap it upward with authority. It will start to lift. Now do the same on the starboard side tap with authority under the back rest, it will move. Repeat back and forth. It will then lift off the brackets. Once it is removed a few times it gets easier. There is no way I could sleep with my feet under that back rest!

thanks for the tips!

We just bought a 2015 Cutwater 26 and slept on it for the first time this weekend. It was pretty comfortable but a bit stiff. I ordered a 2" memory foam topper (king size) to cut down. I was hoping to remove the cushions to make the pattern for the topper but while trying to make the bed, I noticed that not only are the cushions all attached to the wooden boards but the triangle at the very V of the bed is totally fixed in place. I couldn't lift it to get the V birth fitted sheet under there. Am I lifting from the wrong side? Does that actually come out somehow? Ours looks different from your photos.

All the original cushions were removed. The forward V cushion will come up. It has to be removed to get to the bow thruster. The photo I posted of the V berth, I made. The photo's posted is not the original interior. All Custom.

Brian, I am curious as to the bill for your custom mattress and bedding?
Thanks, Roger Ware, Kingston, Ontario (former C28 Owner)

On the expensive side but 100% worth it. The mattress was $1300.00 . The mattress company came to the boat 40 mile distance measured the bunk area and hinge placement there are 3 hinges . The extra hinge is at the very tip of the mattress. This enables me to clear the anchor locker shelf and Mounted TV. They took the V berth cushions for patterns but made the mattress 4" wider than original (mattress is 7" high and the sides are tapered to match the bow flare. I removed the foam from the tan side panels and raised them also to make the Bed wider. https://mcwhorterbedding.com/ made the mattress then deliver it for final fit. No adjustments were needed. They took the mattress back to a seamstress that made 2 sets of custom fitted sheets, and made the custom comforter. They also adjusted the king size pillow shams to queen size shams (the King pillows would take up to much room. The comforter my wife picked was King size to fit the mattress. The sheets ( good quality) and comforter was 550.00. Total 1850.00 . It was worth every penny, we are as comfortable on the boat as we are at home now.

The Bed base I made out of 1/4 marine plywood it is stained to match the custom shelves that are installed where the seat was under the 12V TV

On my C-26, the padded board at the bow was not easily removed - screwed into an aluminum L bracket that required a short ratchet screwdriver to remove the two screws nearest each side. Oddly, the side pads are on removable brackets as Brian describes.

But once done, the sleeping is much improved with our feet free!

Yachtbedding did a good job for us. Fits perfectly, very comfortable .

Hello, I just purchased a custom mattress for my C28 and need to build a base. Yours sounds interesting, and close to our ideas with a hinge. Wondering if you ran the hinge across, or lengthwise from the point to the widest part of the bed. Any help in the way of photos would be helpful. Please fee free to email me at freddyPink@mac.com. Thanks, Gordy

Hello, I just purchased a custom mattress for my 2013 C28. It was built in December of 2013 and has all of the same equipment and furnishings of the 14 and later boats. Pretty much the same price for the mattress from an outfit in Marysville Washington. I would love to take a look at the base you built if you have photos, and if you have the color stain you used, it would be much appreciated. Please feel free to email me at freddyPink@mac.com
Thanks, Gordy
