Desolation sound 2012

Summer will be here before we know it and plans for the 2012 Ranger Tugs Cruise to Desolation Sound are in the works. This year's trip promises to be a great experience! We are starting the trip on Friday July 27 at Ganges Marina on Salt Spring Island. We have a section of the marina reserved for all the boats. Stores (grocery, hardware, liquor etc) are conveniently located nearby for provisioning. You will have time to take in the famous Saturday market and then enjoy a barbecue Saturday night on the docks.
Sunday morning (at 7 am?) we depart for Pender Harbour where we will be staying at Pilothouse Marina. Monday night will be at beautiful Gorge Harbour for another barbecue. After that it is off to explore Desolation Sound as you wish. Then from there for those who wish it is off to explore desolation sound. I will be posting a list of the boats who have signed up at the Rendezvous and boat shows. A full itinerary will be posted in a few weeks. Even though you have signed up please confirm that you are coming .

Wish we could make it this year but we can not however we're planning on towing our R27 out for the event and more in 2013, so please, please, please have a successful 2012 event so the tradition can continue. In the mean time we're cruising Florida's west coast and heading to a Ranger Tug get together in Ft Myers Beach on Feb. 6th for a few days before heading to the Keys. If anyone's in the area please look us up, we usually have adult beverages on board.

Didn't make the Seattle Boat show 🙁 ... just too much going on in our lives etc... However, I've penciled in July 27 to Aug 4 for this 2012 cruise. Please include LAXEY for this. We will be looking forward to exploring much more this time, and meeting up with new and old TugNut friends. Each year we get to explore more and more. Ganges will be a great starting point for this...

Our plan is for LAXEY to leave Edmonds Marina a day or two ahead of Friday July 27th and make its way to Ganges Marina on Salt Island to meet up with others for the start of this 2012 cruise.

We will likely leave our Edmonds Marina on Wed July 25 at around 10am or sooner and will dock for the night at La Conner on Wed July 25. Then on July 26 we will cruise up to Ganges and dock there to be ready for the next morning to join up with the 2012 Desolation Sound cruise flotilla. 🙂

If there are others at Edmonds or any Tugs that may be traveling the same course and passing by Edmonds Marina Wed July 25, or who would be passing La Conner on July 26 on their way to Ganges, then maybe we can arrange to join up for the trip to Ganges.

Today our plan is to make the trip. That was our plan last year, but stuff happens. We'll be coming out of Shilshole and would very much like to catch up with LAXEY at Edmonds or La Conner.

I signed up for the trip but my way of getting there may be a bit circuitous. I, along with John Verde (Port Nut) and Bruce Rhodes (The Red Current), are planning a two-week trip to Barkley and Clayquot sounds on the west side of Vancouver Island. Timing is tentatively set for July 14-28.

After that, I plan to drive to Campbell River and launch the Red Ranger, meeting up with the Desolation Sound crew along the way. I am keeping my fingers crossed that all the logistics work out.

If they do, I look forward to another wonderful trip with lots of wonderful Tugnutters.

I think it would be a great place. You will have free parking for your truck, but will need to pay for your trailer. If you use the lift to launch, you will need cutouts on your trailer bunks. Even so it is one of our favorite places. Stores are close for provisioning. Good restaurants close by...etc.

We have a 2012 Cutwater 28' and would like to join this cruise. We are new to boating and limited experience and would really like to be out there cruising with knowledgable people. We are moored at Schooner Cove on Vancouver Island and would like more information on the cruise and what necessary items we should take with us. Please keep us posted.

While Anacortes IS wonderful, I would recommend Bellingham over Anacortes for your purposes. In 2009 I trailered my R 25 from Northern California to the Salish Sea, for the first time. I went through all the trade-offs, before choosing Squalicum Harbor in Bellingham. Reasons?
1) There is a wonderful, wide launch ramp you can easily back down your trailer, with a waste station adjacent.
2) You won't need to have a crane drop your boat into the water, cut outs, etc.
3) I was able to park my truck AND trailer there for one month, for free, next to the launch ramp. Go to the Harbor office and request a free special permit.
4) There are many fine restaurants within walking distance, and downtown is a few blocks away.
5) Last but not least: your are closer to Sucia Island State Park !!!
