Engine Bracket on R23 Filling with Water

Hello Steve,

If we make sure the fittings on the top are sealed and not creating water going into the pod, you wont need a pump at all. The Armstrong bracket replaces the small inspection hatch on the top of the pod. It is a matter of unscrewing the one that is there, filling the small holes from the screws with a 5200 and putting the Armstrong back in. The new lid doesn't use any screws and just a clamp down system.

Thanks again,

Great, thanks for the info...

I did a Google search for the Armstrong bracket. All I come up with is a whole swim step, pod, motor mount assembly. Not an inspection plate type thing. I'm thinking I'm looking for the wrong thing. Got a link for the proper part?
Thanks,

Go to Armstrongnautical.com and look at their waterproof deck plates. They were designed for their brackets.

This doesn't involve my boat but I read this and feel there should be a Service bulletin written with part numbers needed supplies needed and written instructions of repair procedures. Many dealers may have this. There may be many Ranger owners far from dealers and may need to use a secondary marine repair facility to make the repairs or the owner may make them if capable. All repairs should be followed up as completed so that a few years down the road a new owner purchasing a used Ranger with is not dealing with an issue that should have been fixed. Just my opinion!

Yes, specs and instructions would be helpful....

We just purchased a used 2018 R23 and it exhibits this same problem. I dont mind changing out the deck plate/hatch cover myself to the Armstrong version, but can someone confirm the specific part # that should be used? Anybody else do this modification that can add any advice? (I assume this is not warranty work since the boat is three years old and we are not the original owners)

Also, when I reach inside, the bilge pump appears to be sitting on a 'shelf' that is above the bottom of the 'v', so some amount of water is constantly sitting in there too low for the pump to pick up - is that the expected design?

Lastly, even after the new hatch cover is installed, any advice on sealing the flex tubes or other sources of water inlet?

We had 2 issues last year regarding the pod filling up with water. The 1st was the bilge pump not working. After several months, I finally found the fuse with the help of Tugnuts. Problem solved.

The 2nd was changing out the deck cover/hatch plate to the Armstrong cover. Problem solved. No more excess water in the pod.

Hope this helps.

Peter

I swapped out the factory deck plate for the Armstrong deck plate so I thought I would share some links and info. The plate you need (for a 2018 R23 anyway) is the 6" Armstrong deck plate - https://stores.armstrongnauticalstore.c ... und-white/ - note that 6" refers to the hole diameter.

However, the Armstrong website charges nearly as much in shipping as it does for the part, so I got mine from Fisheries Supply instead - https://www.fisheriessupply.com/armstro ... eck-plates (the plate was cheaper, the shipping was reasonable, and it arrived the next day). Note that on the Fisheries Supply site, it is listed as the 8" version (they list it by the outer diameter instead).

Overall, it really was as easy as removing a few screws to remove the old plate, cleaning up the old sealant around the hole, filling the screw holes (I used Boat Life LifeSeal), and putting the new plate on (it has no hardware - it just tightens with a single hand screw).

Will still need to drain the remaining water out of the pod once the boat is out of the water (and need to replace the garboard drain too - that is another winter project), but hopefully this stops water entering in the first place.

FYI: that’s the cover that our 2021 (delivered in Nov 2020) R-23 shipped with.
