These units do get warm while in operation. Hence the cooling fins on the rear case of those units. However, that does not mean that your unit is not getting a bit too warm. Remember that "hot" means different things to different people. I do trust your assessment though. Are you experiencing any issues with the unit when it starts to get hot or does the performance suffer in any way? I do know these will get quite hot when exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods, so keep the operating conditions in mind. If you feel the operating conditions are normal and you are not able to alleviate the heat build up, I would recommend reaching out to Garmin tech support to get their expert opinion on the matter, especially if this turns out to be a warranty issue.
