When I run my Garmin display for a pronged period, such as more than for an hour or 2 it gets very hot. Even when outside temperatures are in the low 60s the display is very hot, unlike the Volvo display and the Garmin autopilot displays which are warm.

- is the Garmin 8612 intended to run this hot?

Calypso, to answer your question, NO. I would think that your unit is flush mounted and not getting enough air flow to keep it cool. You might think about a small whisper fan to help with ventilation and protect against early failure due to heat issues. Bob

Hopefully the Cutwater Factory will chime in to talk you through the problem / solution.

In the meantime, there are plenty of 8612's out there that might respond with how their units are performing... maybe even another C28 owner.

Garmin Product Support: 800.800.1020 can give you some feedback during their normal business hours.

Good luck!

My garmin 5212 gets warm and that's when I would put on the factory fans. one drawing air into the compartment and one pushing it out. Problem was the fans make so much noise that I would run them for a while, then shut them off and then repeat.
I resolved this by putting speed controllers on both of the motors slowing them down enough to still cool the compartment, but at a reduced noise level. Then I could leave this on continuously when the garmin was on.

Hi Calypso,

These units do get warm while in operation. Hence the cooling fins on the rear case of those units. However, that does not mean that your unit is not getting a bit too warm. Remember that "hot" means different things to different people. I do trust your assessment though. Are you experiencing any issues with the unit when it starts to get hot or does the performance suffer in any way? I do know these will get quite hot when exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods, so keep the operating conditions in mind. If you feel the operating conditions are normal and you are not able to alleviate the heat build up, I would recommend reaching out to Garmin tech support to get their expert opinion on the matter, especially if this turns out to be a warranty issue. Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Ralf

Thanks to all for your helpful comments.

Ralph,

I understand your comment that hot is a relative term, my sense is that the display is heating up more now that it is a few months old than it did when the boat was new in the spring. I will discuss this with the dealer.

Thanks
