hard start

i am looking at a 2009 Ranger 25. It takes three tries to start the QSD 2.0 engine After running a minute it starts normally. Any advice...

Does it smoke after starting? Is it turning over slowly like a weak battery? Does it have good fuel and fuel filter?

No smoke. Battery's full charge. Fuel and filter good. Filter changed last fall at decomishining.

Try using the parallel switch to combine both house and starter banks. If it starts in that configuration then the starter battery isn't supplying enough amps. The engine has to turn at least 170 rpm or the ECM will not initiate fuel injection. When we bought our boat we had starting problems. After much hullabaloo the problem went away when we simply increased the CCA rating of the starting battery well above the recommended size. I don't recall what the manufacturer called for but we ended up with 1300CCA and never had another problem for ten seasons and over 2000 engine hours.
