Hi all,

For those of you that have installed a holding tank vent filter, would you say that it does help reduce the odor after flushing? If so, is it significant, or just a slight reduction?

For R29 owners, where did you install the vent filter? If the consensus is that a vent filter does help to reduce odors, I was considering installing one on the vent line just above the holding tank, as there is space for it, and it would be fairly easy to access. However, I am a little concerned about splashing blackwater getting into the filter, saturating the activated carbon media, potentially plugging it up, which of course would cause other issues (i.e. potentially collapsing the tank when pumping out). Are my concerns warranted, or am I just over-thinking it? Would there be a better place to install a filter?

FYI, I've read a lot about the holding tank odor issue on the Tugnuts and other cruising forums, and I now have Peggy Hall's book, but I'm not willing to increase the vent pipe size, nor willing to convert to fresh water flush (need to save the precious fresh water for other uses). I will also continue to try various tank treatments (Noflex Digestor, Raritan K.O., ...), perhaps more frequently than I have been using them.

Thanks in advance!

-Mike

After reading Peggy Hall's book I decided against installing a vent filter. I also didn't think it was worth the effort of replacing the vent hose, but I did swap out the fuel tank style vent for the holding tank with a straight open through hull so it would get better air flow.

Major improvement in reducing the smell. I installed mine (Cutwater) beneath the v-berth, easy install, just cut the line and insert the filter. I've never had issues with blocked lines or with the pump out.

I put one in my R29 and definitely helped. Easy install (or as easy as anything is on these boats. Installed the horizontal filter on top of the tanks. I don’t think you’d get any splash unless the tank overflowed.

I installed 'thebigorangefilter' on our C-288. Installed in-line in the tank vent hose, two hose clamps and some zip-ties. 100% success!

Thank you all for your replies. It sounds worth it to me. I'm going to go for it this weekend.

Has anyone had success putting in a vent filter in a 2023 R-27?
