Can someone advise how you fill the atf in the trim tab pump? The black plastic cover is near impossible to remove per the instructions written on the front. Don’t know how to get at the plug to fill it. Photo in this album:

Thanks!

The plastic cover on top snaps off - just pull/wiggle it a little and it should come off. Squeezing it a little at the bottom on the sides may help. The full plug is very small, so have a small funnel.

hmm, it does not seem like there's a way to wiggle the cover off? It's sitting on top of the hydraulic motor and there's very little clearance above it to move it around. I can give it another shot....

update, it was easiest to remove the unit from the mount altogether to fill it. That said, I think i have a small fluid leak in one of my trim rams. Is this common? How do I repair? The boat is getting hauled for ceramic etc on Monday. Thanks!

I do have to get the angle just right to get the cover out and back on, but once you do it once or twice it's not too bad.

Sometimes if the tabs have not been used in a while you can get an initial leak that will stop. If you need to replace the o-rings there is a video on the bennet website.

Thanks knotflying! I did watch the video but it’s not super clear on how it all comes apart to replace the O ring. I bought a couple actuators from fisheries just in case. My normal mechanic recommended I just change it out altogether, especially since the boat is 6/7 years old. I’ll see if it leaks again when I take it to Everett Sunday. 🙂

I just replaced both actuators which were 10 years old and were leaking. Lucky they lasted the season and only drained about 1/2 the reservoir. It was pretty straight forward to replace them EXCEPT...

My actuators were installed with the short thru hull hydraulic hose fitting (not the right angle fitting) which was all gunked up with adhesive (4200?). This meant that the hydraulic hose has to be removed on the outside of the stern. This had to be done especially on Port because the large engine exhaust hose completely blocked access to the fitting. No big deal since the hole drilled in the hull easily accommodated pulling the fitting through to the outside. However, this means you need at least a couple inches extra of tubing to be able to pull the fitting outside. Starboard side, no problem, there was a nice big loop of hose off the pump. Port... plenty of tubing... BUT it was fastened down in 3 places against the stern under the stern seat lazerette. It took me and a friend at least 45 minutes to find the tie downs (one was hiding under the rudder post), get to access them, drop the screw driver into the bilge under the thruster (forgot to tie my trusty tool recovery string to it, but dug it out miraculously with a magnet), and pull enough tubing to port to allow the actuator to pull the fitting out.

A couple of things made the work achievable: 1) don't unscrew the tubing tie downs completely. You just need a couple of turns to loosen the plastic band, then spray with WD-40 so the tubing can slide. This will let you gently tug (back and forth motion worked best) the tubing through the fasten downs to have enough to pull the fitting through to the outside of the stern, and 2) once the fittings were removed, I took them down to a great hardware store nearby, who had exact replacements for a couple of bucks. HTH, Gary

Thanks Gary, super helpful. I suspect based on my initial looking that mine are the same as yours with the short fitting, and they are covered in that black 4200 gunk. I purchased the 3” pipe studs and the elbows for the re-install so I won’t have to deal with that again next time. 🙂

If my memory serves me correctly, it is a matter of unscrewing the actuator hinge at the top. Sometimes just tightening it stops the leak.
