We’re Looping and are currently in Alabama, soon crossing into Florida.

Can anyone recommend (link) tackle that would be helpful in catching these crustations.

Thanks

I would start with the state game and fish department rules and regulations for the area you will be boating in, this will give you seasons and limits for your desired catch and gear that is legal and licensing required. Most lobster, shrimp, and crab traps along with rope and floats will take up a lot of space on a boat, so you might want to purchase from a local sport/fishing and tackle shop in the area.
The local boaters will have the best information as to where and how for success !
Best of luck. Bob

The simplest trap is a chicken part (neck, wing, etc) tied to a piece of string and tossed into the shallows next to the bank. Let it sit a bit and draw it in slowly along the bottom, keeping your dip net handy. The crab will not let go as long as you don't lift it off the bottom and you can net it as it gets close. Caught many a blue crab in the bayou that way.

In Florida you may only take lobster (aka spiny lobsters, craw fish) by hand. NO SPEARS. However a mop does fine as it tangles on the shell with all the small spines (hence the name spiny lobster. These crustaceans do not have claws, but long antennae that they wave about to ward off predators). Some dive shops sell tickle sticks, measuring gauges, noose sticks (poles with a wire or nylon loop that you use the tickle stick to cause the spiny lobster to raise its tail and move about so you can place the noose around the body and snare it. Don't pull to hard or you will cut it in half 😳
In the Bahamas Hawaiian slings are allowed to take lobsters. NO SPEAR GUNS. Check with the latest regulations as to the dates and quantity of fish and crustaceans to take an any one time.
I have left boating and have lots of left over dive and fish gear. Includes a Brownie Third Lung, 300 ft hoses and three regulators, spears, weight belts, wetsuits, etc. A really great was to explore the Bahamian reefs at a leisurely pace and not be gulping for air. PM me for more information.

Say it isn't so! The boating world will not be the same! You never know where you will find the "Alice J" in the country. Good luck to future adventures.

Here in Maine the only legal method for a non-resident to get lobsters is to use a credit card or cash. Residents can get a recreational license, but the license is not available to non-residents.
