The diver who just cleaned my boat said my "propeller cap" was missing.
I'm not familiar with this item, anyone have any insight?

That’s a new one on me. It just might be related to a muffler bearing or a left handed screw driver. Could he/she possibly be talking about the propeller zinc?

Add relative bearing grease to you list.
We pulled that on new sailors aboard the ship.
Send them to the engineering spaces for a tub of relative bearing grease,

I agree that your prop zinc is likely missing. We had the same situation when our boat was hauled last October. Prop zinc was missing. I recall reading some posts that the bolt that holds the zinc is prone to loosening up.

When I hauled out this year the prop zinc and associated bolt was missing. When I installed a new one, I rubbed some lanacote on the threads, installed the new zincs and put some 3m 5200 between the zinc and the bolts (filling the gap between the bolt head and zinc hole). 4 months after haulout and close to 250nm travelled, the zinc/bolt are still in the same shape as the day I installed them.

That could be because you insulated the zinc from the bonding circuit.

I agree with previous post. I would clean the surfaces well and get a big stainless steel fender washer and use that instead of the bolt being recessed. The issue is that the zinc starts to get smaller as it protects the running gear. Then it eventually works its way off,

Don't know if there is room for one on a 27, but could you use a collar type zinc on the propeller shaft? I did that on my 21, but had to machine the zinc a little because there was so little space between the prop hub and the cutlass bearing.

I added a collar zinc to the swim platform support. The support is bonded to the rest of the running gear. The zinc is doing its job and is deteriorating nicely.

Thank for the tip about using a washer, didn't think about that.

My shaft line is actually bonded to my bonding circuits. I added a shaft line brush shortly after purchasing the boat last year. All four swim steps struts have a zinc on them and I have an additional sacrificial zinc, connected to the bonding circuit that I hang over the side when alongside. So far, 11 years old boat and no rust what so ever under the water line.

Hi Bill,
What size zinc did you use? Is it a 1" ID or 1.25: ID? Not near my boat to measure.

Tom, if the R25SC is anything like the R27, here are the zinc I installed annually:

4 x X3 Shaft Zinc - 1 inch - swim step struts; 2 x R3 Rudder Zinc Anode - 3 3/4 inch; 1x Propeller D nut Zinc Anode - 1 1/4 inch; 2x SM31180A Side power Aluminium Anode (thrusters). I change the engine anode (120650-13420Z) every six month regardless of their status.
