“Navigate to” doesn’t work

Update: as soon as i hit submit on my post one minute ago I tried again. I Kept the house battery off for 10 mins this time which kills power to the garmin and all. Seems to work again! I will keep everyone updated on how long it sticks. Thanks for everyones help.

Here is an update on my installation. It is working now but I am not absolutely sure why. I checked the N2K backbone and it apparently has independent power going to it (I can see the yellow “drop cable style” power cable plugged into the T-connectors.) I did not reset to factory defaults or cycle power to the chartplotter where I discovered the problem (7616xsv at the main helm).

I did, however, unplug the power from the back of the 7612 on the flybridge during the troubleshooting process because it did not seem to be turning on. After reconnecting power, every time I tried to turn on the flybridge chartplotter, it would get to the “I Accept” button and then just go dark. I went back to my main chartplotter at the helm, looked over the list of Garmin devices, and noticed that my two GHC20 AP pads showed different software versions. Last time I updated the system, Active Captain said it completed the installation but I don’t think it did. I connected Active Captain to the internet and sure enough, there was another update available. Once I installed that update *everything* was working fine again (though perhaps little slower than it used to be?).

So I’m happy to be up and going again, but I’m not sure the different solutions on this thread mean we are all dealing with different problems. I suspect Garmin may be prone to software glitches and conflicts and there may be different ways to jumpstart the system so that it will start working again.

Interestingly enough we pulled anchor this morning 8/1 and experienced the same problem on Kismet. We have not upgraded any software since last summer. Once in port I’ll try powering down per suggestions posted here and check what software we have installed. Thank you all for your timely posts.

At port I turned all battery power and inverter off for 10 minutes. I then turned the gps and autopilot on and when I activated the Navigate to all was back to normal. Thanks again for the suggestions.

My SYSTEM MISSING 5212 Chartplotter error also corrected after powering off for a full ten minutes then restarting. Shorter times didn’t work. Ten minutes seems to be the minimum time to wait to get a full restart.

When I chose a route, waypoint or destination on my 7612 and then press “navigate to” the window that should slide up asking if I want to engage autopilot doesn’t appear. This has been a recurring problem for the past several seasons, sometimes it works, but mostly it doesn’t. At the Pocket Yachts rendezvous two years ago a Garmin rep “fixed it” but the fix didn’t last. I remember he had a hard time with it, rapidly going though so many screens that I lost track. My software is up to date (I’ve re-installed it several times) and I have tried cutting power and trying again to no avail.

Anyone else have this problem or can provide any help?

Thanks!

This has happened occasionally to me. When it does, I push the menu key on the AutoPilot display (not the chart-plotter) and then “Follow Route”. This assumes that you are getting the magenta colored route displayed on the chart-plotter. There are occasions, however, where even the “Follow Route” option does not appear on the autopilot display.. If this occurs then I stop the route and start over with a new one and that usually takes care of it.

I've encountered the same anomaly, and employ the same solution.

I have nothing to add to this, except the same thing is happening to me. I have roughly 100 hours on the 7612. I thought I messed something up, so it is great to see it is not just me. I think garmin makes navigation for aircraft too.....good luck with that. I see two possible fixes from reading this and I really appreciate it.

We are going out for 4 days to-morrow. I had turned off all of my power (12 V including battery disconnect and 120V) on the boat for a few days. I turned everything back on this afternoon getting ready for our trip in the morning and everything was back to normal. Saved a new waypoint, built an autoroute and "navigate to" was an option.

Steve and Penny of Kia Ora very kindly helped me get past my operator error. I was trying to engage "nav" mode from my dedicated Garmin autopilot screen before engaging it from the "big" Garmin screen. The law of primacy failed me as that is how autopilots work on planes but obviously not on boats.

Kia Ora were the first Tug people that we met "in the wild". They were very kind and helpful and I hope to meet more of you once this Covid mess is over.
