Just replaced the Gypsy on my 2009 Lewmar Pro 1000 Generation 2 windlass. Not too difficult, took about 45 minutes total.
But during the replacement I saw something which gave me pause.
There are two small (5mm x 10mm) steel dowel pins that rest between the Gypsy drive shaft and the Gypsy cup to keep the Gypsy spinning with the drive shaft. These two round pins are not stainless and mine looked to be significantly rusted and on their last legs. Without them the windlass is completely unusable.
To order them from Lewmar, you have to buy the 66000098 Clutch nut and cone kit for about $50 to $80 shipped. This kit includes a lot of parts that you don’t need just to get the two small dowel pins. The part I’m referring to is #43 on the diagram below.

After a long discussion with Lewmar tech support, with him looking through a lot of obsolete part and owners manuals, the tech agreed that a round stainless dowel pin measuring 5mm in diameter and 10 mmm in length was what was needed. I found a pack of 15 of these pins in 304 stainless at Walmart for $5.91 shipped.
If your doing annual maintenance on your Lewmar windlass, I’d recommend checking the condition of these pins.

Thank you for the very helpful information; I have servicing my windlass on the list of fall/winter PM tasks after watching a couple of very good YouTube videos on the topic. I'll plan to round up the pins before I get started on that.

Wow! Thank you Al!

I had a windlass jam in our trip to Alaska where I had to remove the gypsy to clear the jam. The aforementioned pins fell out in my hand. They did not look good! After reassembling I immediately took note to buy some spares when I got home. I attempted to buy the pins from Lewmar last April in the expensive kit form from West Marine (Lewmar will not sell the kit directly). The order did not go through due to COVID19 issues in April. I was planning to order the same kit this winter when I read your post. The Walmart pins are now on order. Thank you again!

New dowel pins installed. Here’s a photo for comparison between old and new. What you can’t tell from the photo is that the old ones are pitted from corrosion, one pin is slightly bent and neither one is round.

Thanks Al,

Just got my new drive pins the other day!

Mine were delivered too. Thanks for the heads up!

Just an update in the Lewmar windlass replacement shear pins. After a season of use with the new gypsy and the Walmart stainless shear pins, the windlass has never worked better! Very little wear on the replacement pins. I have a bunch of spare pins if they do show wear in another year or two.
We use the windlass a lot during the season and I run it a couple of times during the off season just to exercise all the internal parts. Fingers crossed that we get another 12 years of use out of it!

Sounds like a good find, Now that you aren't under the gun I would see if you could find a higher grade of stainless, 316 or better.
