Subject: Photo Album for 2019 R29 CB being bottom painted

Today I had the opportunity of visiting the Everett Yacht Services where my new R29 CB was having its hull bottom painted. It was a glorious sunny clear blue sky day with ambient temperature at around 68ºF and in the sun a good 70ºF+.

I managed to capture a bunch of photos and created a Photo Album which I share here.

You are welcomed to download any of the photos for your personal use.

In the yard was a CW30 and a R41. Both looked awesome in their own right. 🙂 However, my attention was purely focused on my new R29 CB. I took several photos unrelated to the bottom painting activities. Some show the 'gear' (wires, tubes, connections) under the Command Bridge's helm which normally are difficult to see, but having hatches in the floor of the Command Bridge allows clear visibility of the underside of the Bridge's helm. I also took photos with me leaning slightly over the side of the command Bridge helm area to show how well it is to see the side of the boat from bow to stern; important when docking. I'm very pleased with the water draining aspect for any water amassing on the Command Bridge's flooring area. At the top of the stairway to the Command Bridge there's some nice non-slip strips to help avoiding shoes or feet from slipping around in wet conditions.

Note the island V-berth mattress is in three sections. This will IMO make it easy for moving/lifting/removing the cushions vs. there being two large mattresses. I also love the new fabric color design for the cabin seating.

My R29 CB will be trailered to the RT Kent factory later this week after the hull bottom painting has been completed. At the Kent factory the boat's final fittings, QA and its graphics will be completed and then hopefully will be delivered to my Edmonds Marina next week (maybe Wednesday Mar 27) for the start of the 2-day training activities.

My only wish that I forgot to ask RT for was for having a 110v outlet near to the V-berth's located TV on the port side. This would have been useful for powering my Apple TV (ATV) Wi-Fi unit for streaming photos and video from my Apple laptop, iPhone and iPad. Not having a 110v outlet near to the TV will mean laying a power cable from the starboard side of the V-berth's 110v outlet over to close to the TV and the ATV. No big issue, but would rather not have to do this.

Looking forward very much getting this boat into the water... 😀

Looks good Barry. I noticed the bow thruster cavity was not bottom painted, Will they do this? Also will you take the thruster propellers off and paint them as well?

Jim:

The bottom painting activity was underway as I took photos. So not all surfaces that are to be painted were painted. My guess is that the bow thruster tunnel will be painted as the bow thruster prop had been removed.

Painting the bow and stern thruster props would seem to me to be unnecessary as they are compost and not metal. So I don't expect them to be painted. My bow thruster prop on my R27/OB was not painted.

Hope this explains things for you. 🙂

Looks good Barry, interesting that you have the opening hatches under the command bridge helm. Our 2019 R-29 CB just has raised areas but no hatches.

Our bow and stern thruster assemblies are bottom painted.

The Command Bridge hatches have an interesting history. 😉 They're nice to have as they provide more daylight into the cabin and things can be handed up from the cabin to people on the CB. 😀

Did you have the thruster props painted ? I don't see the need as they are composite material. The tunnel presumably is painted, right ? The tunnel surfaces are really no different from the hull so should be painted IMO to prevent crud clinging to the tunnel's inside.

Barry,

I don't think the actual props in the thrusters are painted, just the tunnel/housings.

Here are pictures from the first zinc service dive.

BTW... I also elected to have the swim step brace rods painted for 12" from their connection point to the transom. This portion of the bracing rods sit in water under normal boat loading and from my previous RT boats that portion of the brace rods collect a lot of sea cruff/crud. I've even found some of the screw bolts in the plate holding the brace rods to the transom rust out badly over time. Replacing these screw bolts is a challenge if they are so rusted inside they have to be drilled out and trying to remove them they break off inside the transom wall.

Barry,

It looks like you have attached underwater lights to the port side trim tab. I am very interested in doing something similar. Could you share some info on how you did it, where the wires run, where the on/off switches are, etc?

Thanks,
Scott & Skye (27 pound Maine Coon cat & full time captain)

RT now provides/installs underwater lights as a standard feature on their boats. So I would contact RT for their advice. 🙂 ...and yes, they are very cool at night time and children love to watch all the 'gatherings' in the glowing blue looking water. 😀

FYI... The painting was completed yesterday (Thursday). I checked with the Everett Yacht Services and the bow thruster tunnel surface is painted as one of the last things done. Thruster props were not painted.

Thanks for sharing! My 2017 R29 CB also doesn't have the command bridge hatches. Did you ask to have them installed or have they become a standard feature? They look good but would have to think twice about being at the helm with a short kilt

Ha ha.... yes that aspect of having the Command Bridge hatch at the helm position did not escape me one bit. Just dress appropriately is all I can say when on my R29 CB. 😉 No matter, the hatches will be useful for handing things from cabin to people on the Command Bridge, as well as allowing easy communications without the use of a Bluetooth headset being used.

My R29 CB went through an interesting build process. 😱

Barry,

In looking at your pictures, I didn't see that any barrier coating was applied before the bottom paint. Is this typical for bottom painting RT's, not applying a barrier coat first? On our C-Dory, this seemed to be the standard practice.

Thanks Barry. Rather than hijacking your thread, I think I'll start a new one.
