Points North - Cruising on your Ranger Tug

For those of you planning to come along on the Points North Cruise, below you will find some helpful information:

Day one, August 20th; Meet up in Port Townsend. Depart Port Townsend between 9:30 am and 10:00 am. Arrive Poets Cove between 2:00 pm and 2:30 pm. Cruise speed 12 knots
...snip...

Karma:

Not sure how to interpret this...

1) Are people planning on leaving from wherever early AM on Fri Aug 20th to get to Port Townsend by 9:30a ?

2) Are people planning on getting to Port Townsend on Thu Aug 19th and staying over night to make the Fri 9:30a-10a departure time.

I was planning on leaving Edmonds early AM on Aug 20th and getting to Port Townsend later that day sometime. Now it seems I need to do either 1 or 2 above!

If I opt for 1) then what's the guess on how lang it will take to go from Edmonds Marina to Port Townsend early Fri morning ? I know it will depend on cruise speed... Let's see now... Edmonds to Port Townsend is some 24 nautical miles... so weather permitting if I leave Edmonds at around 6am and cruise between 8-10 kts I should get to Port Townsend by 9am, RIGHT ?

Am I correct in assuming we leave Port Townsend as a group for Poet's Cove between 9:30a-10a on Fri Aug 20th ?

How is the meeting actually done at Port Townsend? Do we mill about waiting for all to arrive or do we dock and wait etc ?

Sorry -- but I'm a bit confused over the starting point arrangement/schedule. 🙂

We are planning on leaving a few days early (August 16 or 17) and play along the way. Our plans are not definite, but right now we may anchor at Sucia or some island close by. Anybody is welcome to join us.

Barry,
You are correct. You can either spend the night of the 19th at Port Townsend or head out early on the 20th for Port Townsend. We can meet at or around the fuel dock. We will leave Port Townsend as a group.

Maureen and I will be departing Port Orchard at 5:30 am bound for Port Townsend. Neither of us gets back into Seattle until 10:30 pm on the 19th.

The Gibsons Marina has asked that I re-confirm our tug nut group reservations, etc. for our stay there on Aug 21st.
Can everyone requiring overnight moorage in Gibsons please reply to this post or send me a private message with the following:
Boat Name
Boat Length
The marina has graciously not asked for deposits etc. even though they are VERY busy at this time of year, however they will not be too happy if a bunch of boats are "no-shows" !
Please confirm your information back to me ASAP.
We will up-date you regarding dinner location etc. for our Gibsons Crab festival.
Kim and I look forward to hosting the group in our "home marina" !
Thanks !

R29-????...still no name on her !

I need to add also that my wife Gill has just completed her Chemo sessions and is now in recovery mode. She claims she will be up to the trip but I reserve the need to return home at the first sign she becomes tired or needs medical help. If we do have to cut the trip short and find I cannot make Gibsons Marina Aug 21st I will pay for whatever the 'no-show' charge would be. Gill and I are looking forward to meeting up with all at Gibsons as well as joining the voyage from Port Townsend to Poet's Cove Friday Aug 20th. 🙂

BTW -- Is Gibsons Marina 'dog friendly' as we have two small Fox Terriers as 2nd/3rd Mateys ? 😉

na, na, na, na... na, na, na, na... hey, heeey goodbye.

Zuma is off tomorrow for Points North... see you all in Desolation Sound! We'll have crab in the pot, oysters on the grill and vino in the fridge waiting for our Tugnut friends!!

Lyman and Jeneane,
Sick, Sick, Sick...... That is all I have to say about people like you....... going off and leaving the rest of us here in the lower 48 to support all of the stimulas plans that the government continues to put into place..... You should be here with us, working hard, spending your money in the states! Not some fancy resort in Canada on a facial, pedicure, and massage........

Hey!!!! Got an idea how you can still support the stimulus plan while you go north! Send me your credit card and I will use it for you! That will not only stimulate the economy but also Lyman's blood pressure!!!

Have a great trip! We are all envious of you for getting such an early start north!!!!!

Travel safe, see you on the water!
See you on the 23rd in Desolation!!!!!

Nellie Too is leaving August 16 from Bothell and will stay a few nights in the San Juan Islands before we cross into Canada. We have reservations at Poet's Cove for August 19 and 20. This gives us some flexibility especially if the weather is not good.

I note there are two Marinas at Port Townsend.

1) One is at the extreme point and north of the Ferry terminal

and

2) a much larger one (Port Townsend Boat Haven 48º 6.389' N, 122º 467.257' W) south of the Ferry Terminal with a Coast Guard Station - http://www.portofpt.com/boat_haven.htm

Which one of these Marinas Fuel dock are we to meet up at ?

Barry and Gill --- Of the two we prefer Point Hudson because it is closest to downtown Pt Townsend. Very quaint and colorful with newly rebuilt piers. It is also all transient but call ahead. At Boat Haven you must check in to see what slips are available. It is all permanent but use slips when a boat is out for that day, just like Anacortes. Boat Haven also has the fuel dock.

FYI -- If you get there early check out the new facilities of the Wooden Boat Foundation. Also our favorite restaurant is the Silverwater. Pt. Townsend is a truly elegant little city. It died when the steamships came in and were able to turn the corner. The city was stuck in time and now is now a well preserved monument to the Victorian era. Take a little extra time to be a tourist here.

Cary:
Thanks... I've reserved Slip 30 for night of Aug 19 at the Point Hudson Marina. The google map is out of date and does not show the new dock layout correctly.

Yea -- see that the fuel dock is at the other Marina on other side of the Ferry terminal from Point Hudson. I assume this is where we all meet up or there about, right ?

Barry,
I have your cell number and will call you once Maureen and I are thirty minutes out of Port Townsend. This will alert you to start preparing to depart. Once we complete fueling, I will call you again. You can then get underway and we will meet you outside of the marina.

Sea Sweeper, Tug of my Heart, and anyone else, we can do the same thing for you or, just meet at the fuel dock at Port Townsend's Boat Haven or as it is also called "Port of Port Townsend" (Page 72 in your Waggoner Guide) between 8:30 and 9:00 am on Friday 8/20.

The purpose of going to Port Townsend is two fold; One, no sense in making folks that live north head south to meet at Shilshole as the original plan called for. Two, top off the fuel tanks with low cost fuel before heading into Canada. When we were at Poets Cove last month, fuel was over five dollars per gallon!

Does anyone know a good website that will list what you can/can't take into Canada? I have been on the web, but I can't seem to find a good website that gives you the information I am looking for.

Thanks,
Nita

Taking dog(s) into Canada...

Dogs

- Dogs must be free of evidence of diseases communicable to humans when possibly examined at the port of entry.

- Valid rabies vaccination certificate (including an expiration date usually up to 3 years from the actual vaccine date and a veterinarian's signature). If no expiration date is specified on the certificate, then the certificate is acceptable if the date of the vaccination is not more than 12 months before the date of arrival. The certificate must show that the dog had the rabies vaccine at least 30 days prior to entry.

- Young puppies must be confined at a place of the owner's choosing until they are three months old, then they must be vaccinated. They must remain in confinement for 30 days after the vaccination.

David thanks.

I decided to get to port Townsend on thur pm and stay over night. This reduces the cruise time to poets cove for Gill by at least 3 hrs and gives her a good nights sleep vs. starting off Fri at around 5am and having to sleep onboard at our Edmonds marina. Plus it will ensure we will be on time to meet up with all at 9:30am Fri morning... Plus we can stroll about port Townsend Thur evening and have a nice evening meal etc.

Nita,
Potatoes are a no no going into or out of Canada. Oranges are okay, just not there peels..... Only two bottles of wine or spirits per person. No lamb.... so forget about cooking up that Rack of Lamb for dinner.

The biggest hang up is fresh fruits and vegetables. Bagged and "processed" vegetables, lettuce, etc are okay. Beef, chicken, and pork are okay. We will be buying all of our fruits and vegetables once we get to Gibsons. Tim and Kim own a grocery store there and will provide transportation to and from the marina.

We brought two potatoes back into the US on our return. The customs agent at Friday let us keep them as long as we promised to cook them that night.

I thought I'd detail a Google map showing our outward bound course so I could visualize where we will be going. I like to have a mental picture as we cruise along. I used David's daily itinerary he posted a few days ago.

Sitting here in Campbell River at Discovery Marina... We've had a fabulous trip North; clear skies and calm waters. Did 10 hours today @ 7-8 knots from Nanaimo to CR. Stocked up on fruit & veggies in Nanaimo, remembered that I had 2 teenagers onboard and restocked again here in CR. Hoping to make it up to Blind Channel tomorrow afternoon, winds are suppose to pick up so we'll see what the chop is like.... Taylor is flying out of Pierre's Cove (Echo Bay) on Friday and that is the only time schedule we have.

Zuma is missing all her tugnut friends and looking forward to playing!!!

Great, rub it in....... Glad your having a great time! You need to give us an idea as where we will hook up on Monday the 23rd of August. We should arrive Desolation early afternoon coming in from Hardy Island.

We will be in Gibsons on Saturday. let us know if you need us to bring you anything from the big city....

Take care, travel safe!
