That would be correct. Now, if you are running at very high RPM's (which you should not be) let me know and we will back off a bit.

I took our R25 out yesterday for a ride over to Port Ludlow. I was curious about the boats top speed with 3 adults + baby + full fuel tank + 45 gals fresh water + plus a load of luggage and some 200 lbs on the swim step (dinghy etc). The seas was a little choppy with spray coming over the bow on the outbound but relatively calm during the return trip to Edmonds.

On the return trip with wind astern and calm seas I checked the R25's top speed. With WOT and engining running at 4000 RPM the boats speed hovered between GPS speeds of 15 kts and 16 kts.

So I would suggest I cannot run my R25 at 15 kts for much more than 5 mins at a time as I understand running engine at WOT should not be done for more than 5 to 10 mins.

What do you suggest if you wish for us to go at 15 kts.... ?

From Poets we will travel to Gibsons on Saturday morning. Sunday morning we will travel to Hardy Island and anchor out. Monday will find the group in Desolation Sound. From there, each boat will decide which way they will travel. Some will stick together, some will go off on their own. Karma is departing Refuge Cove on Saturday the 28th running all the way to Friday Harbor. Sunday we will run the rest of the way to Port Orchard.

15 seems a bit low... With three adults and a dog, full fuel, half water, one third holding tank, and bottom paint, we run 20 comfortably... You did not comment on trim tab adjustment - it makes a significant difference.... And get a tiny level (for RV's) and use it to keep the boat level port to starboard with the trim when running which can be another knot... And is the bottom clean?

As far as the engine, don't worry, be happy and run whatever power level you are willing to feed it fuel for hours at a time...
These engines are run at WOT in the test cells at the factory during development to try and destroy them - and when they break they re-engineer that part and try again...

You have to understand that I am an old blow boater who gets a nose bleed when he goes faster than 6 knots, so running at WOT is something that I only do to blow the spider webs out of the turbo on occasion... Cruising in Lake Superior water these past few days I have been forced to run between 8 and 9 knots to time the waves to avoid being broached by following seas... This has caused major trauma to my nervous system as Char has to stand there and dab the red drips from my nose, and to keep reminding me not to look at the fuel flow approaching 3 GPM (the horror, the horror)

Yes I agree -- I was disappointed in the 15 to 16 kts as well. Your 20 kts was a GPS reading. right ?

I did not mess with trim tabs but will do so next time I do a top speed run.

I do already have an inclination instrument but that can show varying readings as the boat makes way through the water.

The boat's hull is pretty clean and has been in salt water for 12 months now.

I talked with Andrew Custis about this and his advice was to not run more than 80% of top RPMs for extended periods, and certainly at 4000 RPM not more than say 5 mins. The important thing Andrew said was that so long as engine hits the 4000 RPM the engine is performing as it should.

Andrew also advised that determining top speed is best done with the boat travelling one way and then again in the opposite direction. This then accounts for tide flow, wave direction and wind.

I will make another top speed run keeping in mind what Andrew said and will also adjust trim tabs to evaluate their affect on speed. Andrew said the trim tabs have a 'sweet spot' and it's just a matter of playing with the trim tabs to figure out where that 'sweet spot' is.

Andrew indicated he would expect my R25 (Yanmar 150hp) to top out at around 17 kts.

I will post back on my future top speed runs later this week.

Willie and I went over to Cap Sante Marina here in Anacortes and met the crews of "Nelly Too" and "Blessings". They are on their way North after spending last night at Elger Bay off Camano Island. Willie drove Sunny and Nita to the Market for provisions. The wine chillers needed restocking.

Nita made me promise we would be with them next year.

With the weather forcast being what it is, we are going to have to make a change in the plans. We will NOT be crossing the Straits of Juan de Fuca. We will instead be running up through LaConner and across to the San Juans.

Barry and Ken, I will recalculate our travel time to Edmonds. We can meet up as we pass by or you guys can go up to La Conner and spend Thursday night. Karma's planned departure time from Port Orchard is still 5:30 am on Friday morning.

The weather prediction for the crossing of the Straits of Georgia are dicey at this time also. We may have to change our plans as far as going to Gibsons.

We are on our way to Stuart Island from Sucia and it is a little choppy, not too bad. At Fossil Bay we had a wild night rocking and rolling with the wind.

Just had a hydralic steering failure, but we think we are back on track. Fernie of "Blessings" thinks he has extra fluid. 😀

David: We will be setting off from Edmonds on Thursday Aug 19th at around Noon time and will travel up to La Conner for the night, getting there maybe around 5pm-6pm. We will be tied up on the inside of the Guest Dock F finger. There's a fuel station adjacent to the north of Dock F. I expect we will see you at La Conner around 10am Friday morning. Just give me a call on my Cell as you approach. If you're going to stop for fuel I'll stay tied up otherwise I'll get Laxey ready to make way for when I see you pass.

We just cleared customs and are now in our slip at Poets Cove. Customs wasn't too bad. Bob and Fernie got off the boat, made their phone call to customs. reboarded the boat and waited for a custom official to board our boat. A few minutes later, we had two custom officials board our boat and they went inside, check everthing out including the basement. We were prepared with our list of items including extra spirits and wasn't charged a fee at all.

The sun is shining and we just saw Harbor Ranger come into customs. Life is great. 😀
