I am in the process of purchasing a used 2016 R 21 EC and when I phoned Ranger to ask for list of the options the boat had I was informed that Ranger is no longer making the R 21 EC. I suspect it just wasn't selling as well as the bigger boats.

Well that's a big surprise for sure. 😱

Seriously? We have collector item status now! $$$$$$$ ;-)

There’s been a few posts now from members saying they have been told by Ranger that the R21 is no longer being made. Sounds like there is something to it.

That is very sad news indeed. We have been considering purchasing a Ranger 21EC for some time and are planning to do so either late this summer or next spring. I guess we will have to look at the used market....... 🙁

RT web site states for the R-21EC.... so there's still some hope presumably.

"Inspired by a traditional Bristol Bay trawler design, the Ranger R-21EC will never go out of style, ensuring both lasting appeal and maximum resale value. Easily trailerable, this boat rewards its owner with a level of versatility that few other cruisers can match."

Looks like no new R21 EC's left in the West Coast! At least none advertised by WC dealers on yachtworld. Six used advertised on the West Coast so there's no shortage of availability as long as you can accept a used boat - with possibly a brand new engine!

Looks like the writing on the wall is getting pretty clear. Expect new R25 outboard to be announced next year replacing the R25 SC. Ranger Tugs thinks the market and/or building economics is moving away from smaller (under 29') inboard Diesel engine powered boats! And bigger (can you say R38 CB??) is better!!

I know we're getting OT here..... but suspect the R-27 with inboard diesel will be a likely candidate for being abandoned by RT in next year possibly.

So we're likely to see next year...

R-23/OB at around $110K-$120K
R-25/OB at around $150K-$160K
R-27/OB at around $200K-$220K
R-29/Diesel at round $260K+
R-31
R-38

I really do think it a shame for RT to drop the R-21EC, if indeed it's true they will.

For RT to make a decent/better business & profit they really have to increase their monthly build rate and the R-23's popularity attracting a younger customer set is a testament to RT's outboard vs. diesel strategy being correct.

During the early days for the R-25 (Classic) RT was pumping out around 9 per month.

To quote from an article I read some time ago.... "...the Livingston family, boating was as much about experimenting with new boat designs as it was about recreation."

The R-27/OB appears to be following the same selling trend rate as for the R-23. There are people plonking down their R-27/OB deposits today that are looking at an Aug 2018 for a delivery. If RT pumps out R-27/OBs at the rate of 5 to 7 per month that means some 60 to 84 R-27/OBs per year and some $12M to $17M in revenue. I also suspect RT's total annual labor cost must be around $30M.

I know my local dealer has 4 EC21's in stock, 2 blue, 1 hero red, 1 claret red. I will be seeing him on Tuesday and I will see if I can get any more information about this.

Per RT at Poets Cove they are no longer building the R27 Classic or the R25SC at this time due to demand for the new OB models and available factory capacity. They may fire them back up in the future (or come out with new Diesel models?) depending on demand but I wouldn't hold my breath! It will be interesting to see what happens the price of the used discontinued diesel models in the future. Given their uniqueness and now limited supply I suspect prices will be going up.

Yes, at the Bremerton Trawlerfest in May this year there was a conspicuous absence of the R-25SC and R-27(Classic) models and the R-21EC as well. However, this may have been because of limited dock space in the Bremerton marina... 😉 ... but somehow doubt that.

The RT's R-23 factory in Auburn is dedicated to R-23's and behind this factory (also owned by RT) is a huge expanse of land which could be used to add/extend the R-23 factory or used for some other purpose.

The RT Kent factory was used for building R-21EC, R-25 (Classic), R-25SC and R-27 (Classic) models. This where my R-25 (Classic) and R-21EC were built. During my visit to this factory recently in past few weeks the only model being built there were R-27/OB models.

Red Raven nailed it. We are at capacity right now with building the R27OB. Our plan is not to discontinue the R21EC, 25SC and the R27 diesel. As the R27OB settles down, I suspect these models will be brought back into production.

With four new R-21ECs in ME then there's no shortage so long as transit to owner's location isn't too inconvenient. 🙂 I would also suspect there must be new R-25SC and R-27(Classic) models sitting on dealer's yards in USA somewhere.

I'm on the West Coast in British Columbia, that is a loooooong way from Maine. 🙁

Very glad to hear that they are NOT permanently stopping production of the R-21EC, guess we will see what the situation is in the Spring.........

PetDrs: There's still hope ... However, if I were in your shoes and was serious about purchasing a new R-21EC I would not wait until next Spring only to be disappointed with RT's continued speculation of returning it to production status. IMO the speculation will persist throughout 2018. I'm sure a deal can be made to move a new R-21EC from anywhere in USA to your location. Just saying now. Good luck.

The shipping charge to get a boat from the factory to Maine is about $5K!!! It is a little higher than that for my 27, but I think a 21 will be a little less. Certainly not pocket change.

There are a few used ones for sale even on the BC coast, you just need to look in the right places. It really depends if you have to have a brand new boat or not. I know I sure wouldn’t be paying several or more thousand dollars to get a new one transported especially from the US. Then you have to deal with bringing it across the line and that’s always a pain in the arse at best. 😱

I've not spent much time figuring the shipping cost you've mentioned..... However, for 3000 miles cross country at 10 mpg and taking 10 days should cost around $2000 if you can find someone to trailer the boat for you and accept the $2000 payment. Of course, there's a return trip that could add another $1K to this.... Just thinking without too much thought here... 😱

Thanks for the input everyone, it is really appreciated.

I definitely do not want to pay shipping from the East Coast and then still have to add the cost to get it across the border. Yikes!

It isn't my intention to derail the thread but......

I have located three 2011's for sale locally and a 2008 slightly further away. Anything I should know about the 2011's? I find it strange that three R-21EC's for sale are all 2011's.... maybe just coincidence but just checking to make sure.

Thanks!
