Fellow Tug Nuts-
I'm considering installing a below-decks ("engine room") ventilation system in our 2020 R27 OB. The goal is to exhaust fumes and vapors from the gas tank and bilges, rather than have them infiltrate the cabin. The general design seems (mostly) clear: install a 3" or 4" in-line marine bilge blower with an intake hose drawing air from the bottom third of the rear bilge area. The part that's not clear to me is: what is the best way to vent the exhaust to the outside? Specifically, where is the best location for an exhaust vent, and is there a way to avoid cutting a hole in the hull/deck?

I don't plan to install dedicated exterior air inlets, as I aim to have the blower draw air from inside the cabin and from the outside through the various openings to the bilge/locker area. I'd love to hear thoughts on this approach as well.
Sincerely,

As we wait for our R27 I am curious if cabin vapors are an issue with other R27OB owners? If not should you first rule out a leak of some sort?

The bilge on our R-23 doesn’t have any odors.

We get no odors from our bilge, or in our cabin, for that matter.

The only time we smell gasoline is when I'm at the fuel dock filling up. Or when I'm changing out the fuel filter in the center cockpit lazarette.

When we got our boat brand new, we would smell an odor when we first got down to the boat after it would sit for several days. Call it, the "new boat smell", similar to that of a car. Once we aired the boat out it went away. We never noticed it while using the boat. Just after the boat sat closed up for several days. It took a long long long time for that to finally go away. But it finally did.

Our 2021 R27 did some off gassing for about 2 months, way less than most all of the dozen new boats I have ever purchased in my life. We unhooked the co detector in the cabin because it wouldn’t stop going off when the cabin heated up. 18 months later and the boat doesn’t have any odors at all.

If you have a gen set or wet cell batteries I could see a reason to used forced exhaust venting. Standing bilge water could get nasty too. Moving air could help dry it out.
