I’m planning on our new to us dinghy this weekend. It’s mounted on the factory lift system and has a 2.5 Yamaha outboard.

I’m wondering how awkward it is to mount the outboard on the dinghy.

It seems to me that I would have to lower the dinghy then retrieve the outboard from the mount on the port side. I would then carry the motor over to the starboard side and use the rack sidewalk to walk out to the dinghy. I would then step into the dinghy with the motor in order to mount it.

I think it would be easier if the either the sidewalk was on the side of the dinghy stern or the weaver davits were on the starboard side of the dinghy.

Any suggestions would be welcome. I really don’t want to drop the outboard!

Yeah, I completely hear where you are coming from. I don't really think there is much that could be done in the layout to make it easier. I leave the dingy connected to the davit while I step in with the outboard that makes it a little more stable. Now for the bad advice... I usually have a beer before doing it. It doesn't help, but it does make me care less.

I made a custom dingy lift last year for our 2025 R27 OB. It utilizes linear actuators for lifting (Rather than the awkward hand crank). In designing it I wanted to incorporate an easy method for putting the tender motor on and off, so I built a stand for it on the port side of the lift. If you look carefully at the picture you can see a small step (coated with no-slip tape). I can take the motor on and off easily with no fear of dropping it in the chuck. Perhaps it’s possible for you to modify the factory lift to something similar? I also added a holder for the stern tie reel so when the lift is down it is at a perfect height to deploy from the swim deck. Lastly, in the position the tender motor is in, it is easy to use the “No More Buckets” small outboard engine flusher to clean out the salt water at the end of the day, without having to take the motor home to flush, or try and configure a bucket under the motor.
