Looking to purchase
In Canada, yacht club safety checks are requiring that we have a Radar Reflector. Do you have any suggestions for best placement and type of deflector? Personally, I’m pretty sure radar can pick up our C28 considering large logs show up on my radar. But in order for us to use our slip we need a reflector.
Any help is appreciated.

Here are some links for your reading enjoyment, radar deflector (reflector) reviews.

Most passive radar deflector's do not meet the required spec, all of the active deflectors do. The best passive deflector is around $100 last time I looked, and the active ones were $900-$1200 depending on if they are "deflecting" one or both radar bands. The reviews are a little old and some of the passive units are no longer available.

During installation of radar on my R21ec I had to take the smoke stack off to run cables, there was a deflector installed inside! My boat is a 2009 model, I think if you contact the factory they will let you know if your boat was built with one installed. Hope this helps and saves you a few dollars Bob

Reflector - Deflector ? Please help me understand why someone would want to deflect a radar signal !
I would want to reflect as much as I could to be seen in open water with poor visibly, my second question is why one would need either when moored in port?
Am not the brightest light in the harbor. Bob

I think you mean a radar reflector, not deflector. There should be one in your stack.

I think it depends on the year. From a previous discussion:

“Andrew Custis wrote:
As of July 1st, 2014 we quit installing the radar reflectors. If your boat was built prior to that date, you have a radar reflector.

Thank you,

I just purchased a 2011 R29 and inside the stack is a marine TV antenna. No reflector.

Thanks so much everyone! I’ll read through it all more thoroughly this afternoon. Sorry, reflector not deflector.

Thank you. 🙂
I saw that post as well, so I’m thinking it hasn’t been installed. I don’t remember any of the sales reps mentioning a reflector. I’ll check with Cutwater to make sure.

Bob Daily,
I’ll check but I think Cutwater stopped installIng them in 2014. Our Yacht Club requires it for their safety check and compliance to Canadian regulations, amongst a whole list of other safety requirements. It’s a policy thing, which may or may not make sense but I’d like to moor my boat so I’ll play along. 😉

It does seem odd that a marina would require a radar reflector. Not sure why they would make such a requirement. One can surely pick up a marina on the radar.

Canada law requires a reflector to be used when required and needed. Does that mean on board or installed?
If it was me I would buy a cheep unit and put in locker for use when needed, fulfilling the requirements of the mariner and Canadian law
Sorry about the sarcasm on my prior post Bob

Five Oceans Echomaster Radar Reflector part no #FO-2316 unit is 12" x 12" brakes down to 12x12x3/4" for easy storage. When needed unit can be attached to flag pole or mast cost is about $35.00 on amazon
Hope this helps you get through the requirements good luck. Bob

Thanks Bob,
They check to make sure it’s installed. Ugh. That portable one is a good idea! No worries about the sarcasm. It’s kinda warranted . 😉 Especially since I think I found 5 power boats in the marina without one—unless they are well hidden. All the sailboats have one.
Thanks for the suggestions! We do navigate around the tankers in Vancouver Harbour...but we can certainly see them on our radar.

I have an ABS encased tri-lens reflector on my boat that I purchased several years ago on a recommendation from this site. Going back to research where I purchased it was unsuccessful but also turned up that these don't deem to be available anymore. It appears that they were developed for the military, popular for sailboats to compensate for the healing and once sold by West Marine. Product testing gave them very very high marks but customer reviews of the supplied bracket failures seemed to be their downfall possibly leading to lawsuits. Mine is thru mounted directly to the stainless steel plate on the mast above my Garmin Radar by a stainless steel bolt. The unit has provision for that type of thru mounting. There is no chance of bracket failure, the unit is very compact, attractive, and is not affected by salt conditions in its ABS casing. I'm very pleased with mine and people tell me I am very visible on their radar.

A search for trip-lens radar reflectors on the computer will show pictures of what these look like but I have no idea where one can be purchased.

Thanks so much Bob, I’ll look up your suggestions. Right now she’s dry docked. Damaged port trim tab and issue with leg on kicker. Got a gel coat and such while she’s out. Hoping to have her back in a couple of weeks. Missing my boat!
