Will kayak on the roof rack of C 302 affect the radar effectiveness or even a roof top cargo
box. THANKS

From the Garman Installation instructions: (Obstruction in the path of the radar beam may cause blind and shadow sectors, or generate false echoes.) Bob

Yes it does effect the radar returns. Advantage of Ranger Tugs The section blocked is aft. The Cutwaters is side views are effected. I have a Paddle board that is stored on the top of pilot house starboard side it does effect the returns.

Thanks for the information, that's what I thought.

One thing is certain, ask a question on-line and you'll always get conflicting answers. Here goes...

I stored a Hobie tandem kayak on the port-side roof, mounted on it's side on my C28 for two years. Never noticed any issue with radar interference. Only removed it because it is such a PITA to load and unload.

I remember bringing that question up to either a Hobie or Garmin rep (cannot be sure which), who told that the plastic construction of the kayak does not interfere with radar transmissions or returns.

The best way to check operation of the radar, and is recommended by Garman! Is to operate it on clear day with good visibility and verify the targets. My radar will pick up rubber rafts and tubes being pulled behind tow boats. It is also a good way to see the offset from GPS as far as shoreline and other fixed items. This will also let you know if you have any blind spots or areas that are not visible on the radar. I do know that when a target is within a close range my unit will not see due to beam shooting over the top (out of the cone) I will randomly use the radar during good weather just to keep proficient on the use prior to needing it. Just another data point here... last month I mounted a large Malibu Two XL sitting flat on the roof of my C28 on the starboard side, not on its side but laying flat. There was a thick part of the rear of the kayak right next to the radar dome. I did some test cruises through the Newport Harbor channel and was pretty sure that the radar return looked softer to that side. I ended up pulling it down mostly for the access issues described by others, but do feel that it blocked some signal.
