is there a chart available for each model of tug showing the speed and gph versus rpm? also can the generator fuel tank be used as an auxiliary/extra fuel tank on all models? is the generator fuel tank 30 gallons on all models?
thanks.

Probably. Meanwhile, here's the Cutwater 28 one for comparison:

Change that 'probably' to 'maybe not' judging by the lack of response! 🙁

However, although the Cutwater has a very different underwater rear hull shape compared to the similar sized Tugs, at displacement speeds the figures should be somewhat relevant for those with the Yanmar 6BY2-260 engine.

Anyhow, hopefully it makes for interesting reading, and perhaps those with Tugs could chip in with some figures they might have calculated for their own boats?

I have posted a speed vs RPM chart in the Nellie May album. It is for a Classic R-21. If you massage the data a little, there is an inflection point at about 6.6 mph, which is a pretty good measure of the hull speed.

You might be able to build you own to get a ballpark idea. Most engines have a fuel consumption chart available someplace in their literature based on RPM. You could convert those RPM settings to the speed you actually make at that RPM and get some rough idea of efficiency. Nowhere-near-perfect, but neither are factory charts in the real world since the odds of your boat being loaded to the same degree, having the load distributed the same way, having the same winds and currents, amount of fouling, even the type of bottom paint, if any, etc., etc. are pretty slim.

For instance, for an R21-EC this brochure for the 3YM30 would be the basis of your chart.

i found a review of the R29 giving a chart for fuel consumption of its 260HP engine here:

http://www.newboats.com/article/-/Ranger-Tugs-R29

however it is twice the HP of the ranger i am most interested in buying: the R25 [or possibly R27]. in addition to engine cruising data, am interested in estimating how much auxiliary fuel i would need to extend the range to do the shortest transatlantic leg [prob. from Canada-Greenland-Iceland] needed to cross the pond, if additional aux tanks would be needed to carry [when the aux tank on the generator is not enough]. the R25 is probably the sweet spot in fuel eff. & speed, but has only 80 gallon main tank for its 150HP yanmar diesel. will keep looking for more data [boat reviews, mainly] and hope the factory can find time to respond with info and rec. & appreciate any add. info posted my way. regards, fritz.

I can tell you this about the 27, at 1600 rpm we do about 7 knots at 1 gph or 7 KPG. Anything above 2000 rpm, the mileage drops to around 2 KPG all the way up to 4000 rpm and 20 knots still getting about 2 KPG. I guess I could make a chart for more precise numbers, but wind and currents will have a big effect of course and skew the numbers.

Better figure on a helicopter to make a couple of fuel deliveries.

i don't know about helicopter service, but at 7nm/gal you have a range already over 550nm before you have to go to aux fuel [gen, etc]. canada - greenland - Reyjkavik - Faroes - Scotland legs are all within an extended range with aux fuel aboard??

Split the difference to cover adverse currents to 3.5 then carry 100 extra plus another for safety total 300 on board, and it might be a fun trip for a younger crew. Keep us posted on your plans. I will watch with envy.

Hi all;

I have calculated all of this for our 2010 Ranger 25, 150hp Yanmar. The distances, speed are in nautical miles and knots, but the consumption is in liters (I'm in Canada) but can easily be converted to U.S. Gallons. The charts will give you a reasonable idea of your fuel efficiency; but keep in mind that it will depend on conditions, and weight etc.

email me and I will send it to you as an attachment. Put "Fuel Efficiency Data" in the subject line.

Cheers

Looks like an old thread brought back to life. But here's a link to the factory site with a "Motorboating Magazine" article on the R25 (classic) with the Cummins 150hp engine. There is an efficiency chart within the article. Of course it reflects a lightly loaded boat.

I received a fuel consumption chart from the factory - via the dealer - after I bought my boat. 2013 25SC. Laminated and seems reasonably accurate. Check with Andrew or Kenny. They will probably send you one!
