Im curious if anyone out there has rebuilt the raw water pump bearing housing. To be clear, it's the housing the pulley is mounted on in front of the impeller pump body. I have replaced the impeller for routine maintenance including the little "O" ring and have noticed a drip with some corrosion on the underside of the pulley housing where the bearings are located. I've removed the clip holding the bearings in and had no luck removing the bearings and seals. I do see some brass-looking shaving inside and hear metal scraping lightly. Something is amiss in there. I have the schematic of the entire part in question but am wondering if I should be the one to disassemble the part or if it will need more serious help than I can provide. My parts supplier seems to think all these little parts are available (although she hasn't checked). I'm skeptical that they are but it would be nice if it were a relatively straight forward rebuild. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I am in the Northeast, If it were me I would contact Mack Boring. They are the main distributor and major repair shop for Yanmar. If parts are available they can get them or perhaps tell you who to contact in the PNW. If you need their number PM me and I will send it to you.

Hello Ray,

I would recommend doing what Mike (Knotflying) says. Your pump may be under warranty.

To see the basic principles in rebuilding the raw water pump, here (http://www.pbase.com/mainecruising/raw_water_pump) is a tutorial showing a gear-driven pump. The idea is the same as a belt driven pump like yours.

Here is an update on my raw water pump: Thanks for the replies and link to the rebuild document. The link to rebuilding the pump gave me the courage to tear mind down to see what happened. I called Mack Boring and they appropriately referred me to the West Coast distributor. My local Yanmar supplier has been working hard to find the parts but not all of them are available. Check that, one, yes one, mechanical seal IS available in the Netherlands, 30 days shipping and more Euros than I feel comfortable converting to USD. I called several Yanmar shops and they confirmed none were available in the U.S. or Japan. However a complete pump is readily available for upwards of $900.00. My local independent mechanic has the original pump now and sounds confident he can find the parts or even a new pump by determining who makes the pump for Yanmar. I'll keep the forum posted when I hear more. Thanks for the responses.

HOW IN THE WORLD can a currently produced Yanmar engine in a 2012MY boat NOT HAVE A READILY AVAILBLE RAW WATER PUMP? Isn't it a Johnson Pump?

This is not a patently Ranger Tug problem but I'm sure they are interested to know that common engine components which could be considered "wear" items ARE NOT AVAILABLE. Hence you talk to 'cruisers' who carry EXTRA pumps or pump rebuild kits.

Raw water pumps commonly last decades but they can, and do, "go bad" without warning. I'm blown away...

Rant over,

dave

I have been following this thread and Dave is correct ...... $900 is way out of line. The pump on the Yanmar 30 is a Johnson impeller, and as I recall it is a F4B-9. I just ordered two sets of impellers, one for the Y30 and for the Y20 in the launch which has the same pump. The impellers were about $26 each and the supplier for all things Johnson is Marelco Inc at 3900 3rd Ave NW. suite 2 Seattle, Wa phone number 206-545-4224. If I recall the total pump is right at $200. Hope this helps ....... Marelco might even have the rebuild kits ........ Fran 😉

To be clear, the pump and some, not all, parts are available to me through Yanmar in Georgia (USA). The mechanical seal has been the challenging part to locate. I have determined it is likely a Johnson pump and will likely be able to find one more economically through independent vendors, maybe even a kit to rebuild it. It seems a bit premature for this to have occurred, but it's a mechanical part and these things can happen. A good reminder to carry spares when going to remote locations. Dave, I mentioned my issue with John Livingston at Trawlerfest yesterday. He suggested I call Richard in their parts department and see if he has the pump manufacturer and model on record. I'm waiting to hear from him after the weekend. Fran, thanks for the Marelco's contact info. That may be of help if it is a Johnson pump. I know it takes a Johnson F7 series impeller 09-1028BT-1. Fisheries in Seattle also carries parts for Johnson. I'll be sure to post my resolution to this repair when it happens.

Rats! I had high hopes my mechanic would be successful, but in the end Yanmar got the best of him. Johnson, I'm told, does make the water pump for Yanmar but were unable, unwilling, or not allowed to provide Johnson part numbers. They also said that pump was a proprietary Yanmar part. I'm running out of time so I ordered a pump which I hope will be here in 10 days or so. When I have more time I'll do more research for matching up parts for the old pump.

There is success in failure! My east coast contact emailed me last week and gave me the following information:
That BY pump is made by Johnson (#10-13374-01) and the Johnson # for the
mechanical seal is 09-20-503 (New johnson # is 0-2247.080 )
Local to you try Marelco 206 545 4224 for either Johnson #
. The pump is not available through Johnson, but parts are. Fran, you told me so and I thought my mechanic contacted them. You were spot on with suggesting MARELCO. I'm not sure if they would have known the part number without the East coast doing the leg work on this. The parts (mechanical seal, clip and washer arrived the next business day on my doorstep for $58. The pump was rebuilt with these parts and I installed it yesterday. Ran it and no leaks detected overnight and I'll be giving it a test drive tomorrow. I should have had replaced the bearings while I was at it, but they were fine as far as my mechanic could tell, and they felt smooth. When replacing the impeller I suggest inspecting the forward pump housing for signs of leaking. Now let's go cruising!

Yea!! Yea!! We wait your arrival in Oh Canada.

Hello DI,

That's GREAT news. Glad you got your boat ready to go...because it's all about being on the water.

After about 350 hours and 3 months of use I decided to take a look at my impeller tonight. I'm getting good at this impeller changin' and I had it removed and replaced in about an hour. After inspecting the old impeller I could not find any cracks in the rubber. Of course I put in a new one and put the housing and belt back on. The water pump itself which had the mechanical seal replaced, looked like as it did when I put it on. No leaks apparent so I would recommend rebuilding if that's a choice you have.
